Hair Ice

This is called "hair ice" and it's peculiar to the Pacific NW. Found this piece near Merriman Falls in the Olympic National Forest on a cold morning.

These silky ice strands form on rotting wood when temperatures dip below 0°C. A certain fungus triggers a process that changes how the water freezes, making it form into fine, hair-like strands instead of solid ice.

Exidiopsis effusa or Hair Ice! It's finally cold enough for this magical occurrence. While many conditions need to be just right for this fungus to do this, the season for resisting fascism is every season!

✨ A magical winter moment! ✨ While walking, the kids pointed out “strange snow piles,” but it wasn’t snow! It turned out to be #hairice, fragile icy threads formed by fungi on dead wood. It melts like snow in the sun! So glad I had my camera to capture it!
