10 years ago up to 1,000 Great White Sharks were found in Gansbaai, South Africa but 2 orcas have had a major impact.

Humans remain the biggest issue. Global shark numbers have halved since 1970. The fishing industry kills 100+ million sharks annually.

‘Awe-inspiring and harrowing’: how two orcas with a taste for liver decimated the great white shark capital of the world
A decade ago, up to 1,000 of the apex predators lived in one South African bay. Now they have gone, fleeing from killer whales. But the gap they have left creates problems for other species

26 Feb 1852 // Troopship HMS Birkenhead struck rocks and sank off Gansbaai, South Africa. 193 survived from about 450 on board. The men stood in ranks on deck and maintained discipline as she sank, so that the women and children could escape in the boats. #RoyalNavy #Shipwreck

Over three days, the team sampled and tagged four white sharks and saw only two more.

In contrast, historical research sites like False Bay, Gansbaai, or Mossel Bay could attract up to 15 sharks in hours.

Today I have begun researching & structuring a piece on the infamous "Port" & "Starboard" - a pair of orcas that have killed several great white sharks along the western cape of South Africa since 2017. I was even there interning in Gansbaai when one of the bodies washed up (see pic).

Stay tuned! 🦈

#SANavy frigate SAS Isandlwana (F146), seen off Gansbaai near the southern-most tip of Africa in April, is now in Durban. Still without armament, there is a good chance she is going to SA Shipyards for a much-delayed midlife upgrade.
Limited funds = only essential work.

Fantastic experience at Afrikanos Gansbaai: a cage dive with crocs! Highly recommended. You learn so much about these magnificent creatures.

The team is amazing & knowledgeable. Don't be in a rush. Take a refreshing shower afterward and stay for lunch and cocktails on the deck in the restaurant.
