The core purpose of the proposed #GalwayRingRoad is not just to make driving easier for today's car users but to create the conditions for even larger volumes of motor traffic in future.

Public transport and active travel are at best secondary to that main objective.

2025 is the 10th Anniversary of Galway City Council's pride and joy, the #ThreadneedleBikeLane.

The facility, which got its own special mention in Arup's documentation for the proposed #GalwayRingRoad, offers 200 metres of car-free cycling between two secondary schools, in one direction.

The quashing by the High Court of ABP's decision in favour of the CO2-boosting #GalwayRingRoad was an early example of the Section 15 obligation making its presence felt.
As @orlakelleher.bsky.social and I commented in a piece in the Irish Jurist in 2023, this section 15 obligation “may yet prove to be amongst the most impactful of the legal changes made to the Climate Act in 2021”!

Any transport plan officially adopted on the basis of an INCREASED modal share for cars (to 67.3%) is a bad car plan. Which is what the proposed second #GalwayRingRoad is expected to achieve by 2039.

For that reason alone the plan should be scrapped entirely. No excuses. No equivocation.
The best bike plan starts with a good car plan.

We have no interest in manufactured car vs bike discourse, often used as a tactic to colour requests for safe cycling in Galway as extremist.

While our members have diverse views on the N6 Galway Ring Road there's consensus that it's a bad car plan.

Same/similar argument applies to any major *new* roads projects in the period to 2030 (at least). Yes, #GalwayRingRoad I'm looking at you. (Road maintenance, localised safety upgrades etc. are not a problem. But significant expansions in overall road *capacity* definitely are!)

The proposed #GalwayRingRoad is a huge mistake.

It would supercharge the city's chronic car addiction, while increasing CO2 emissions by a projected 49% versus the Do Nothing option (according to official figures presented at the Bord Pleanála oral hearing), whether or not EV targets are achieved.
They also plan to invest in Ireland’s road and active travel networks! Fine Gael backs key projects like the Galway Ring Road and Cork-Limerick motorway. Mobility hubs in every local area will support bike/scooter sharing, EV charging, and carpooling
