The defendants were acquitted or not convicted of all offenses leveled against them, including violent offenses.

Campaigners say this result is a “monumental victory” that has “vindicated” the defendants, who were smeared by government ministers as “violent criminals.”

Campaigners added that the refusal to convict the defendants of criminal damage, despite evidence of damage to Israeli weapons, shows that “the jury understood that it is not those who destroy Israeli weapons who are guilty; rather, the guilty party is the one that deploys such weapons to commit genocide in Gaza.”

Today's judgments are hugely important.

The unwillingness of the jury to find Palestine Action activists guilty further highlights how disproportionate the decision to proscribe the organization was.

This raises fundamental questions about the state's use of anti-terrorism laws against direct action protest.

As Amnesty International submitted in our intervention in the judicial review of the government's proscription decision, wielding the enormous powers of the state anti-terrorism apparatus in this way is a major intrusion into rights to freedom of assembly and expression.

After being accused of having a 'terrorism connection' these activists, and others, have been held in prison for up to 17 months before today's verdicts.

The impact of this prolonged pre-trial detention on them, their friends and their families has been grim and it must come to an immediate end.
