#FileSizes
I learned that davinci resolve exports huge videos with gigabyte filesizes omg

If you’re running a blog, for the love of all is good, please do not upload larger than 500kb images in posts. You will quickly run out of space and you will have to pay a lot to fix that problem (bigger server, huge load times, bad SEO score, etc). There’s no reason to have those huge filesizes

I think it would be useful to see this data on a year-by-year basis, to see how it looked when filesizes and teamsizes were smaller.
I love this analytical take on video game categorization from Antoine Mayerowitz and Julie Belzanne:

hushcrasher.substack.com/p/taxonomy-o...

Instead of trying to vibe-intuit the definition of an "indie" game, the authors analyzed the data from the perspective of game size and credits length

But they won. They stuck to their guns so long that everyone else just gave up and let them win.

The kilobyte officially became 1000 bytes, and the old base-2 unit of 1024 became the idiotic "kibibyte". That's why your computer shows filesizes as "KiB/MiB/GiB".

They shrinkflated your gigabytes.

Quantum computing idea: piracy site that offers hashes and filesizes, and then your computer reconstructs the file.

gonna be hard to make a point like that stick when you make a post right away saying that you mostly play AAA games with huge filesizes & 60$ price tags at release

this shit ranges from 200mb-4gb per executable and i feel like a lot of parts in a prefix can be symlinked from one central authority or something to reduce filesizes. obviously i don't work on WINE so i could be completely wrong and dumb but i think this makes sense

its really hard to argue with the performance you can get out of a Leptos site, both when used on the server and in terms of delivered filesizes. Islands makes it even better, and setting it up to be static in this case (vs server-driven) is literally commenting out 3 lines of code

It’s Day 19 of the Nerd³ Awards for 2024, and today we’re looking at filesizes! Why? Because my awards are clearly better than all the others.

These are done automatically in Clip Studio Paint! If you use CSP you can set it to do a timelapse automatically whenever you are draw and it will capture each brush stroke, but it does increase your filesizes a lot

Having a look through the filesizes of the SVG logos at https://github.com/edent/SuperTinyIcons

And, yeah, that sounds about right for C++!

I had to try to publish nativeAOT the bug fables save editor with .net 8 as a test

THE EXECUTABLE WENT FROM 62.9 MB TO 38.3 MB, A 40% REDUCTION!

HOLY SHIT! they weren't kidding when they said they improved the filesizes!

"Varlet" has been getting the weirdest divide in reception I've seen in a while.

A brief look through socials seems to show mostly positive sentiments.

But then some reviews flash my way and, huh? Mostly Negative on Steam? Over filesizes? 4/10 from RPGSite? Wha...? Noisy Pixel...well, the usual.

Don't worry it's all tongue in cheek, I mean just compare to the filesizes of most competitors.

I'm not worried about storage capacity here 'cause I don't have too many games or other media on this PS3 (it's a 250GB Super Slim model, for the record), but there's some pretty hefty filesizes associated with these individual updates--some of them being a couple gigabytes at a time. Wow.

even tho bluesky is still growing it would be nice to have larger video filesizes so i dont have to demolish the bitrate of anything longer than like 30 seconds
November 14, 2024 at 8:49 AM
a lot of games with large filesizes could be cut in half if the right compromises are made
video games were never meant to be 100 GB

years of research yet no real-world use found for 4k textures

wanted good graphics anyway, as a joke? we had a tool for that: it was called imagining that the game looked like the manual art

I dove into the tech when it was announced and it's an amazing technique, but there's a little voice in the back of my head that always goes "We were finally getting reasonable game filesizes again... why is unreal encouraging devs to slap in their billion poly artist proof meshes into the game..."

On a related note, if you have runs of photos that appear completely black, and their filesizes are several times smaller than usual (but vary slightly between photos)...

...then I suspect you've left your phone unlocked in your pocket.

Noticed images on my posts have had their resolutions scaled to a dimension and their filesizes marked way up even though they were uploaded as PNG into JPG. Using bsky.app on desktop, probably not just me? Filled out a support ticket.

Hardware is so nippy these days that filesizes just kind of sneak up on you. Ah yes, thinks I, let's pull a copy of my recent Photoshop work for Dropbox as well as keeping it on Adobe's cloud.

Wait, what do you mean, "uploading"? It should be instant. What's going o... oh, it's half a gig.

all the audio stuf will probobly not be built into the horse file cause i want 2 keep the filesizes down so u can easily send over discord wo nitro n stuff.
also i have not worked with audio importing n stuff o i will need 2 experement

Okay one thing I'd like to clarify.

I would love to retroactively turn on timelapse for my old drawings but I can't because it needs to be turned on before you draw in CSP PC.

Reason I never keep timelapse on for any of my art normally is because it inflates filesizes from 20-30MB to over 500MB

It came full circle when I had to also work on my Midsummer Guide. So, while I was doing *that* fix, I also reduced the image filesizes in the guide to help it load quicker, along with some other tweaks.

Back to the original one now!

When I think about game filesizes I always remember that time a basketball game that released on Switch literally could not fit on it, you NEEDED an SD card to download it lol
