According to the report, the numbers are about the more effective engaments with SAM-systems and not EW. I suspect that EW is more of a factor regarding FPVs and other semi-civilian UAS.

Cost efficency. An FPV until explosion also delivers recon.

Mixture is the key nowadays.
On certain weather conditions FPVs don't fly where Artilly can still strike.
And you cant deliver a nearly 50kg 155mm round with a cheap FPV drohne.

Question; we are told that FPVs are the poor man's substitute for a lack of artillery. However russia has far more (& arguably better) artillery yet still puts the same resources into developing FPVs and doctrine as the Ukrainians. So am I missing something as nobody has given a rational answer

It should be noted that this is the first time I have seen additional grille protection at the rear, exactly where, if I am not mistaken, propellant charges are stored inside the howitzer. I believe lessons learned from losing a couple to FPVs.

For point defence against a small one. "Drone" is a broad category from FPVs to Samad and Shahed style ones. The range you're engaging at is pretty critical. Yeats was covering approach to the area.

Soldiers from Mortar Platoon, 4 Scots Mortar in action during exercise STEADFAST DART at the Smardan Training Base in Romania. The 81 mm mortar endures, even in a world of FPVs

Good to hear a sober analysis. There are functioning branches in russia. Especially uavs, fpvs and apparently AD.
The army is absolutely horrible, apart from the uav units.

Battalions are buying cases of white monster to scan the QR codes on the side because one of them might have a tier skip which means they get an extra fire mission from FPVs that SV knocked off from Wild Hornets (they need 6 extra fire missions because American gizmos don't work)

This has generally been my take as well. Being able to land essentially an IED/mine behind the FLOT is extremely disruptive, especially when paired with persistent observation. My main complaint is the tendency to treat specifically FPVs as a panacea/wunderwaffe.
December 12, 2025 at 4:15 PM
I think Op Spiderweb is a great encapsulation of all of this. "A bunch of FPVs took out a dozen strategic bombers! Why are we investing in multi-million dollar planes?" No, that's not what happened. What happened was an absolutely flawless Intelligence operation, the drones were just a tool in it.
December 12, 2025 at 2:04 PM
All good stuff. I think we also (like always) tend to get hung up on the sexy stuff like FPVs and drone swarms when the boring stuff like logistics/medical drones hold a lot of promise too. If you can resupply and evac smaller, more remote forces things get pretty interesting.

We have some great anecdata suggesting that low-cost FPVs kind of suck:

I could watch russian convoys burn all day...

And I will, because it's beautiful, and the russians are pushing right now harder than ever.

You will see over 1000 dead PER DAY no issues this month.

The orcs are coming, FPVs WILL destroy them all, not fancy western tech.

An underrated ability of FPVs and other small UAS is that they are very useful for cheaply converting m-kills into k-kills. During the early phase of the war a significant percentage of armor was recovered and repaired after being disabled by artillery. FPVs and bombers prevent that almost for free.
