4chan’s wordfilters also gave us the Rickroll. The word “egg” got filtered to “duck”, which lead to the word “eggroll” being changed to “duckroll”. Folks would duckroll each other by fake linking to hentai only for it to be this pic of a duck on wheels. That’s why the Rick Astley vid is rickrolling

Although strictly speaking that precise scenario couldn't have occurred in "the early 2000s" since the first known instance of a Rickroll was circa 2007 (according to Moot, anyway). We can push that a bit earlier by generalizing it somewhat to include a duckroll, but just how much is hard to say.
