As a hobby, I like to illustrate weekly #Torah portions. In the Deuteronomy #parsha called Devarim, giant King Og of Bashan figures, along with his giant bed. Bashan was a location now in the Golan Heights that has many big dolmen. So I put his giant bed on top of one. #watercolor #JewSky #ArtYear
A large rock megalithic tomb with boulders forming the walls, and laid flat across the top. Atop the "roof" is a large bed, with big fluffy pillows and white bedding.

Maimonides writes: “The redeeming of captives takes precedence over supporting the poor or clothing them. There is no greater mitzvah than redeeming captives for the problems of the captive include being hungry, thirsty, unclothed, and they are in danger of their lives too. Ignoring the need to redeem captives goes against these Torah laws: “Do not harden your heart or shut your hand against your needy fellow” (Devarim 15:7); “Do not stand idly by while your neighbor’s blood is shed” (Vayikra 19:16). And misses out on the following mitzvot: “You must surely open your hand to him or her” (Devarim 15:8); “...Love your neighbor as yourself” (Vayikra 19:18); “Rescue those who are drawn to death” (Proverbs 24:11) and "... there is no mitzvah greater than the redeeming of captives.” (Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Matanot Aniyim 8:10-11)

Thinking about this and how it is impossible for me to interpret as anything other than community care and expanded social services.
An excerpt from the Talmud R. Chamna b. R. Chanina said: "What is the meaning of the verse, 'Follow Lord your God?' Is it possible for a human to follow the Divine Presence? Is it not written, 'Lord your God is a devouring fire' (Devarim 4:24)? Rather, emulate His actions. "Just as He clothes the naked, as is written, 'Lord God made for Adam and his wife costs of skin and clothed them' (Bereshit 4:21), so you too clothe the naked. "God visits the sick...so you too visit the sick. "God comforts the mourner...so you too comfort the mourner. "God buries the dead...so you too bury the dead."

1/ Chevre, this week’s parsha is Devarim (דברים). We start the last book of the Torah this week. This parsha is always read before Tisha BeAv, the fast day we remember the destruction of The 2 Temples in Jerusalem (amongst other things throughout Jewish History).

Did we not add a supplement to B'midbar when redacting? Is Devarim not written way later and then added to the "Books of Moses"? Was the Seven Days of Creation story not tacked on to the the front of Bereishit so that the Priests could have first say?

All religions do it, because it helps them.
