When I was in the Army, unless you had a FTX, officers had to pay for Dfac meals. I was ok with that because I wanted to experience what the soldiers ate. The ones that I couldn’t check on demand were the ones that lived off post with families, trying to make ends meet on that meager pay.

Freeze dried skittles got me through Afghanistan. Peanut butter n jelly and DFAC berry crumble sheet cakes got me through a solid five, six year period of lost confusion in the Navy after earning my tab. Chasing Joe Kony? Snickers n bear jerky. Every road has had a different salvation snack.

or just give them free food on base? it'd probably cost like 2 bucks a meal if they did it themselves instead of outsourcing dfac to aramark etc and then the dfac being randomly closed half the time anyway

They always had it playing everywhere. Base hospital, DFAC, Finance office, etc... You couldn't get away from it. Though back when I was in, Dubya was president, so Fox only ever seemed to talk about celebrity fashion or whatever nonsense.

This will devastate families. And especially harm enlisted soldiers living on remote bases with little access to nearby stores w/o transportation. The DoD cafeteria system (DFAC) is also suffering closures. Which will start to leave military with almost no options for food on small bases.

We have a food pantry set up at our installation. Our dual status technicians are not getting paid. And we are not a residential installation so there is no DFAC. No care for the fed civilians that work here though. Just the military. 🫠

Yeah but they probably figured that none of the officers eat in the dfac. So it’s just junior enlisted who are getting screwed here. A lot of them who work in the prison work shifts that don’t fit the dfac hours too.

An overwhelming majority of soldiers ( easily over 80%) rely on the DFAC for their every meal, and don't get a food stipend outside of that.

Daaaamn I was stationed in Hohenfels for a few years, and the DFAC was the only thing keeping me alive. I'm really sorry about this, sisters and brothers, but please try to remember these things when the Clown King orders you to fire on us.

I’m not saying it’s rare. I’m just saying *most* E1s don’t need it. Because they’re single 19 year olds who live in the barracks and can eat at the DFAC (at least 1 of which is now closed 🤦♂️).
The marginal increase for what a 21 year old with wife & 2 kids need is usually more than what BAS/H covers.
