Psst. I had a big birthday yesterday and spent it with new friends hiking some trails in a new-to-me nature preserve. It was a beautiful day here in NC, at 70F, for someone who looks forward to snow on my bday since my skating party days on neighboring pond in CT.

Cladoniaceae ... not sure of the species. I like the moniker "Trumpet Lichen", but they also kind of look like little golf tees.

They are so small — it's neat to see the details on a big screen.

This is a 5-shot focus stack (135mm, F/11, 1/10 sec, ISO 100).

34) Cup lichens (also Cladoniaceae!) produce some of the most recognizable fruiting bodies and other reproductive structures (see ALT text)

If you had to be a mushroom, which one would you be? (look at the pictures for more details)

🍄 Cantharellus
🍄 Cladoniaceae
🍄 Amanita
🍄 Hygrocybe

Spoiler alert: We love all mushroom kinds and that is why you have to join us in Chanterelle Solace and (1/2)

🌿☕ Good morning 🌞 🌞 🌞

Powderhorn.. Cladoniaceae subulata?...or The Last of Us.. you decide..

Lichen has a symbiotic association of algae (usually green) or cyanobacteria & fungi 🍄 🍄 🍄 just utterly fascinating life forms

Stunning, that's just the way I roll 🎲

Phylogenetic position and genetic diversity of Cladonia jaliscana (Cladoniaceae, Lecanorales)
Cladonia jaliscana is a lichen forming fungus, common, and abundant mainly in temperate forests of Mexico, which has received little attention in the literature. It is characterized by a conspicuous and persistent primary thallus, clavate podetia, red hymenial disc, and containing didymic and thamnolic acids as major substances. In this study we re-examine C. jaliscana from a morphological, chemical, and phylogenetic perspective. New specimens were collected from Durango, Jalisco, Veracruz, and Zacatecas, Mexico. Additionally, specimens from different herbaria were studied (ENCB, IBUG, MEXU, and XAL) including the holotype and two paratypes. A phylogeny of Erythrocarpae clade was estimated using ITS rDNA, rpb2, and tef1 by Maximum Likelihood analysis and Bayesian inference. Cladonia jaliscana was recovered as monophyletic within Subglaucescentes subclade, in Erythrocarpae clade. Cladonia leprocephala, C. meridensis, and C. microscypha formed a sister clade of C. jaliscana. A new chemotype containing barbatic acid was found in this species. The description of the species was updated to include morphological and chemical variation. The intra-specific genetic variation of C. jaliscana was explored using haplotype networks and FST test. These analyses showed some geographical structure. Genetic differentiation of the Veracruz population was accompanied by morphological and chemical differences, indicating some genetic isolation.

look at this cool lichen I found. it's a species in the genus Cladonia, a group of moss-like lichens in the family Cladoniaceae. They are the primary food source for reindeer and caribou, and antibiotic compounds are extracted from some species to create antibiotic cream.
