Fellow chemists, scientists, and lab rats,

Next semester, my Crime Scene Chemistry class is focusing on miscommunication.

Do you have any stories about improperly labeled items in the lab that led to confusion or an accident?

I'm surprised to learn that CSB announced a deployment on October 27: www.csb.gov/us-chemical-...

I'd expect an initial report by the end of the year or so...

Hey, #chemchat, we’re having a discussion at work about how to prevent needle sticks. Every job I’ve been at has tried and failed. (Well. Some effectively disincentivized needle stick *reporting* which is obviously not the same)

We want to craft good rules that people want to follow. Any ideas?

Big scare & spectacular save in #lab at CTFM this week: mislabeled oxygen & nitrogen lines caused diethylzinc fire in a glovebox. Perfect reaction by the team achieved containment inside the box, quick cleanup enables the start of rebuild <48 hr later!

Amazing #teamwork!

Let's see... LRADS top out around ~160db, and

www.popularmechanics.com/military/wea...

at least according to Perdue University, 150db will rupture eardrums at 25 meters.

www.chem.purdue.edu/chemsafety/T...

So, I'll go with both. Both are bad, and LRADS can absolutely cause hearing damage/loss.

The LRAD is like a car alarm from hell—and if you aren’t careful, it could permanently damage your hearing.

They were very quick at thoroughly rinsing the puncture point with water and calling 911 (finger started swelling). The student was released from the hospital and his finger seems safe thanks to their awareness of the potential danger and quick response. [2/2] #ChemSafety

There have been a ton, but the one that immediately comes to mind is one I frequently tell my students about when we discuss lab safety. We had a hood in my grad lab that was dedicated to concentrated acids. I was pouring some nitric acid when I felt the tell-tale itching on my arms... (1/)

Scientist friends, as we are building community here, I have a question to get to know you:

What is a mistake that you made in the lab?

Lets normalise that;
Gloves are permeable #chemsafety

Check you SDS for how often you should taken them ogg and bin them
I didn't realise that the gloves I was handling samples with formol in them with were somewhat permeable until the formol that sealed through reacted with my friend's hand sanitizer I borrowed.
