No I don't want AI in my teaching! I just want students to learn to put together glassware. To calculate ratios of chemicals. To write down the data, very simple data. Then to tell me what it means! I really don't need AI for any of it.

The far right was in overdrive yesterday to make the mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge about trans people.

It helped obscure the fact that it's actually Canada's first mass shooting targeting children. Canada's Dunblane.

In all this *gestures broadly* the most annoying is that Paul Thomas Anderson was so on the money because it's really the plot of One Battle After Another happening IRL.

Quebec idioms I would love to use in English:
- You have some crust to eat!
- I buttoned up like a jealous person.
- They have forehead all around their head.
- Hey! You're buttering pretty heavily.

This usually happens outside of city centres where there isn't a crowd filming everything. It's an Indigenous person's word against a settler's, and the major bias towards settler "authority" in all these cases leads to predictable outcomes. 15 deaths in 15 weeks... www.aptnnews.ca/ourstories/i...

An Indigenous person, from my community, was executed for allegedly stealing $40 of gas, and the only evidence that seems to matter to the courts is officer testimony despite the well-documented fact that police lie incessantly to protect themselves and each other.

Before Canadians get all smug as they usually do, just remember how often things like this happen here and get very little, if any, media attention. Police, and "civilian", settlers here shoot Indigenous people all the time and usually get away with it.

“You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive.” -- James Baldwin
this is why teaching history feels so important to me right now.
The thing I always come back to is how many people never despaired against longer odds, and how arrogant it would be to put myself above them.
