AI and policing without guardrails is a dangerous path. KC’s new drone program makes it clear: we need strict oversight, transparency, and community protections. No community should be a testing ground for unregulated surveillance.

it’s not completely AI-free, but unfortunately, not much is these days. At least it’s optional, which is the next best thing. As the walls close in with grifters shoving slop tech down our throats, I will continue to avoid genAI as much as possible. I want transparency and the freedom of choice.

People act like there was only one victim with Epstein. This is what AI says.
Victims' attorney Annie Farmer also referenced this number, demanding full transparency for the "estimated one thousand women and girls who were harmed by Epstein and his associates".

"Researching & reflecting on the harms of AI is not itself harm reduction. It may even contribute to rationalizing, normalizing, & enabling harm. Critical reflection without appropriate action is thus quintessentially critical washing."

I’m happy to share my new essay, full of student voices, about using a transparency survey as a tool for reasoning on AI.

Reflection is more valuable than ever right now. Maybe this will be of use in your classroom?

For the next step of the workshop: The goal of data synthesis is to transform extracted data into meaningful insights. AI can accelerate this by suggesting themes, but humans provide the interpretive rigor: verifying relevance, interpreting meaning, and ensuring transparency.

Can we just talk about how it is amazing that I can watch meetings of subcommittees of the European Parliament while commuting or exercising? The world it’s full of misinformation and AI but also the internet and transparency in government is great.

Public bodies should always be transparent and disclose if a generative AI tool is used in any public document, even if the output from such tools has been assessed by their staff. In such a disclosure, specific details about the tools should also be mentioned for transparency.

I guess I don't mind so much that companies like Google, Canva/Affinity, etc. seem to have pivoted from forcing AI on people by default to making AI seem like a premium service, because I will always be impervious to those attempts at evoking FOMO.
