I don’t think of plot pastas :) but I do think of dramatic plot threads! Whether I’m writing fiction or nonfiction, I want the drama to tie to stakes & emotions. Usually those threads get refined while I’m revising: word choice, sentence structure; choosing what to reveal and when.

Books nourish our souls. Food nourishes our bodies and spirits. It makes sense that we would enjoy them together! Besides, you all know my theory that a good story is constructed much like a good dessert recipe... #KidLitChat #KidLitConfections

Yes, I do heavily skew toward cookies in the confections that I share. Mostly because cookies are my love language. I used to host an open house every December where I would make over 5,000 cookies (more than 25 unique varieties each year) to share with everyone. #KidLitChat

Basically, as with all of my recipes, it mostly comes down to knowing how the ingredients work individually so that I can mix them together in "kitchen chemistry" ways to get the results I'm looking for. I've been doing this for 30 years, so I've got a lot of experience by now! :) #KidLitChat

The feta and capers are both a bit salty, so I first beat them together to get a creamy mixture. And I omitted the salt that I would normally include in the recipe. Celery has a fresh, but strong flavor, so a little bit of dried celery leaves was a good base flavor to build on. ... #KidLitChat

Love this technique! Would also add that humor is a great tension relief (in life and books) and I find putting some comic moments in the down time makes the harder/tender moments more palatable. #kidlitchat

I have no idea what you mean. We never discuss food here. #Kidlitchat, gaslighting edition.

Could just be a joke or something funny happens and lets out the tension. #KidLitChat

When I’m developing my stories, I make sure that there are hurdles on the way. A story without the character overcoming some sort of challenge would be a very boring story. #kidlitchat
TOPIC: The Olympics are full of plots/drama: ticking clocks, one-on-one competition, team competition, changing weather, too much available pasta, and more. So, how do you think about and add plot drama to your work? As a reader, what dramatic events hook you in and carry you along? #kidlitchat

It's just like hanging out with other writers, someone brings cookies or cakes or pies...I mean I bring a huge hunk of meat, but I'm weird like that. #kidlitchat

Is it me, or all roads in #kidlitchat end up in food (especially cookies)? 🍪

This bakery has the best buttercream. The texture is so light. It’s high art. #kidlitchat

OK. I am just so curious. How did you make it work? I am certain it was really good, just having difficulty picturing what it was like. #kidlitchat

Honestly, I was surprised that it turned out as well as it did! But cheese actually works really well in confections. :) #KidLitChat

I love it when you can give a traditional treat a twist when my kids were little, my favorite pranks were when I twisted expectations on food. Like the time I served a beautiful "Carrot Cake" for dinner that was really a two-layer meatloaf with mashed potato and cheddar cheese frosting! #KidLitChat

I know it's not kid lit and it's something people complained about it, but George RR Martin's food scenes are as epic as the battles. #kidlitchat

I love the food scenes in C.S. Lewis's books, and I can only hope to one day write a scene as significant and cozy as when the Pevensie children have a meal with Mr. and Mrs. Beaver. #Kidlitchat
