The other angle in the story was the opinion among skating fans like myself that only a perfect Kagiyama, or a charging Sato, could deny a less than perfect Malinin. No one saw Shaidorov coming. He wasn’t supposed to be the story. Yet somehow, the skating gods aligned perfectly for him.

On a night filled with mistakes all over the ice, with many men’s figure skaters wondering what might have been, Canada’s Stephen Gogolev delivered a personal best performance.

The 21-year-old met the moment every time he took to the Olympic ice.

And he finished 5th.

I have been to the Ramstore shopping mall where Mikhail Shaidorov learned to skate—it’s really surreal to see an ice rink inside a mall—so this is a pretty big day for me, too.
