some good climate/energy news:

* 96% of new US power capacity was carbon-free in 2024 (56 gigawatts!)

* 2025 included the first month ever when 51% of power on the U.S. grid was carbon-free

* The golbal trend is overwhelming: The world is now investing more $ in clean energy than fossil fuels

This Politico article (on the left) doesn't point out that energy costs are actually way up under Trump (see on the right). Here's the link to the Politico article.

‘For households, too, power prices have soared, in part because of increased lines charges… …the proportion of households behind on their winter energy bills rose to 4.2 percent in July. More people were asking to borrow money to pay their power bills than to buy cars, houses or get credit cards.’

Trump's domestic (always anti-green energy and anti-climate) and foreign policies (attack oil producing competitor countries) are driven by America's oil billionaires who desperately want to squeeze every cent they can make to the detriment of America's long-term interests

Excellent article. Not explicitly discussed but evident within is the failure of the electricity sector reforms which were meant to ‘open up the market’ and reduce the cost of power

“While wealthy nations count the financial cost of disasters, millions of people across Africa, Asia and the Caribbean are counting lost lives, homes and futures. In 2026, govts must stop burying their heads in the sand and start responding with real support for people on the frontlines.” #NewYear
"The bill for extreme weather damages will continue to rise until the world slashes greenhouse gas emissions and phases out fossil fuels."
What some don't understand: it will rise disproportionately as resilience limits of infrastructure are increasingly exceeded.

The big question is: how many of the initiatives that made 96% of new power carbon free in 2024 have been canceled to prop up the dying fossil fuel-based energy industry in the US?
