I googled him, and Wow!!! He sailed twice around the world in a 12ft sailboat he built on his balcony!
My all-time favorite is Thor Heyerdahl - Kon-Tiki.
I also really admire George Dyson's work with the Aleut baidarka - The Starship and the Canoe.
