Brianna Ghey was the target of brutal bullying and assault that cumulated in her violent murder because she was trans. Any 'solution' to her death that isn't focused on the culture of transphobia that made a group of children think her life was worth less is a distraction from this fact.

Photo of a press pass that has been sliced through diagonally. For the past eight years I have worked as a stringer for Reuters news agency. My photos covering stories in the prairie provinces have been published by the New York Times, Al Jazeera, and other media outlets across North America, Asia, Europe, and elsewhere. At this point it's become impossible for me to maintain a relationship with Reuters given its role in justifying and enabling the systematic assassination of 245 journalists in Gaza. I owe my colleagues in Palestine at least this much, and so much more. When Israel murdered Anas Al-Sharif, together with the entire Al-Jazeera crew in Gaza City on August 10, Reuters chose to publish Israel's entirely baseless claim that Al-Sharif was a Hamas operative - one of countless lies that media outlets like Reuters have dutifully repeated and dignified. Reuters' willingness to perpetuate Israel's propaganda has not spared their own reporters from Israel's genocide. Five more journalists, including Reuters cameraman Hossam Al-Masri, were among 20 people killed this morning in another attack on Nasser hospital. It was what's known as a "double tap" strike, in which Israel bombs a civilian target like a school or hospital; waits for medics, rescue teams, and journalists to arrive; and then strikes again. Western media is directly culpable for creating the conditions in which this can happen. As Jeremy Scahill from Drop Site News put it, "every major outlet - from the New York Times to the Washington Post, from AP to Reuters - has served as a conveyor belt for Israeli propaganda, sanitizing war crimes and dehumanizing victims, abandoning their colleagues and their alleged commitment to true and ethical reporting." By repeating Israel's genocidal fabrications without determining if they have any credibility - willfully abandoning the most basic responsibility of journalism - Western media outlets have made possible the killing of more journalists in two years on one tiny strip of land than in WWI, WWIl, and the wars in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia, and Ukraine combined, to say nothing of starving an entire population, shredding its children, and burning people alive. The fact that Anas Al-Sharif's work won a Pulitzer Prize for Reuters did not compel them to come to his defence when Israeli occupation forces placed him on a "hit list" of journalists accused of being Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants. It did not compel them to come to his defence when he appealed to international media for protection after an Israeli military spokesperson posted a video making clear their intention to assassinate him following a report he did on the growing famine. It did not compel them to report on his death honestly when he was hunted and killed weeks later. I have valued the work that I brought to Reuters over the past eight years, but at this point I can't conceive of wearing this press pass with anything but deep shame and grief. I don't know what it means to begin to honour the courage and sacrifice of journalists in Gaza - the bravest and best to ever live - but going forward I will direct whatever contributions I have to offer with that front of mind.

A little break, as a treat!

The clouds on the right side are the highest, and so are lit by the setting sun from below, becoming a beautiful display of orange, pink and purple. On the left side the clouds were much closer to the ground, and were not touched by direct sunlight, leaving them with a grey/blue appearance, sort of like the sea on a windy and cloudy day, with the white foam breaking up the darker water beneath.

USAID matters. I've often disagreed with their strategy and choices, but their work saves more lives than any philanthropy can. It's a rounding error in the federal budget, and one of the best things we do as a country. To see it destroyed overnight by one unelected man is an unmitigated horror.

Hiking on a warm, cloudy January day.
The picture is taken at the end of Serra Oseli, a long crest near the border between the Urzulei and Baunei’s municipalities. The valley beneath is part of the Codula di Luna, near Teletottes.
Me, sitting on a limestone block with my back turned against the camera and my legs dangling over the edge. I’m wearing an old white helmet, of the type that climbers use, a black t-shirt and a black backpack. My arms are pointed behind me, straight, bearing some of my bodyweight as i lean slightly backwards. My head is rotated to the left, exposing the profile of my nose, illuminated by the sunlight. My beard and glasses are barely distinguishable, and had i not known they were there i would have guessed they were part of the harness that keeps my helmet on my head. The limestone block is part of a bigger hill, more of a monolith, but only a small 3m wide section is visible, so it appears i’m sitting on a light grey boulder. On the other side of the boulder, a vast green valley opens up, and the perspective highlights the height difference between where i’m sitting and the bottom of the valley. The picture is taken at around my height, keeping the horizon in the middle of the frame, so that the boulder itself covers the part of the hill that extends towards the valley, giving the impression that the drop is more dramatic than it actually is. In the very back, the main valley splits into two (the picture is oriented upstream, so it’s really the two valleys connecting to form the main one right beneath me), and some far off mountains take a deep blue tint against the setting sun. The sky is mostly grey, as it was a rather cloudy day, except for a thin blue patch, which opened up at the perfect moment to let the sun pierce through, giving anything that’s illuminated a golden tint and making the shadows appear darker with contrast.

A thin layer of white ice covering a clearing in the mediterranean bush, so thin that grey limestone rocks and green blades of grass protrude out of it. Despite the similarity in color, the rocks in the background are not covered in ice, they are simply grey limestone. Bottom of the picture is the surface of an old artificial clearing, made to burn wood and make charcoal. At the edge of the clearing, some asphodel and juniper-trees outline the thin path. I’m not certain about the nature of one of the trees, it might not be a juniper, but i didn’t notice back then, i’m not gonna walk there now just to check, sorry :/ At the same level of the bottom of the trees, there are a black and a light blue patches, which are the backpacks of my two friends. Right behind them, there is the left wall of the canyon(?) that we are walking, grey as the limestone that makes it, and green as the trees that grow on it. Finally, on the top side of the picture, the sky. It was cloudy that day, and the oversaturated sky looks white, almost brighter than the rocks. Me, smiling and holding my phone up with with the flashlight on. A smiling guy, wearing a black jacket and a black beanie, holds up their phone at a concert to make some light. He is wearing rectangular glasses, and has a dark, longish beard. (Hope this is enough, if you need more details pls let me know i’ll do my best)

On a clear winter day, a moron finds a funny mirror on the ground.
Pic taken at Perda Liana, in Gairo, Sardinia. It was chilly enough to allow us to find ice in the northern side of the hill, but the sun had already made quick work of any solid water on this side.
The shadow of me, crouching and holding two fingers in a v shape, cast on a puddle with a big rock in the distance. The puddle is reflecting the image of the monolith in the distance. The rest of the picture (upper two thirds) portrays a cone shaped hill, on top of which sits a 50m tall rock, standing out against the monochromatic clear sky.
