Neurophysiology has long emphasized localized brain function, but new rodent data show more distributed cognition networks. PMID:41345295, Nat Rev Neurosci 2025, @NatRevNeurosci https://doi.org/10.1038/s41583-025-00992-5 #Medsky #Pharmsky #RNA #ASHG #ESHG 🧪
How distributed is the brain-wide network that is recruited for cognition? | Nature Reviews Neuroscience
Half a century of neurophysiological recordings from single electrodes established a ‘localized’ viewpoint on function in the brain — that complex behaviour results from computations that are carried out and representations that occur across distinct brain areas, each of which has a specialized role. Data generated from new techniques for specific, high-throughput measurement of neuronal activity and behaviour in rodents have prompted an alternative viewpoint, which posits that neural encoding of behavioural variables is distributed across a wide range of areas: ‘everything, everywhere, all at once’. After briefly introducing these paradigms, we evaluate which of them better describes cognition — the manipulation of internal variables that enables flexible behaviour. Measurements of neuronal activity in both rodents and primates suggest that cognitive variables are reflected broadly but not ubiquitously across the brain, including, to a surprising degree, in regions engaged i

All I have ever wanted is a tidy brain 🧠
nature.com Nature @nature.com · Sep 26
A fresh supply of the immune cells that keep the brain tidy might one day help to treat a host of conditions, from ultra-rare genetic disorders to more familiar scourges, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Swapping old immune cells in the brain with fresh ones could treat disease
Replacing immune cells called microglia holds promise for addressing brain conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.

We aren't on a slippery slope to a constitutional crisis. We are IN the crisis. Time for leaders - political leaders, business leaders, civic leaders - to pick a side: democracy or autocracy?

This is the official communication from the FDA to physicians on acetaminophen use in pregnancy.
- They acknowledge the lack of a causal link with autism
- Essentially tell physicians to keep doing what we've been doing anyway
It's very different from the press conference.
Pass it on.
