Ever since recorded music attained fidelity on-par with live performances, it could be argued that nobody "needs" to learn to play an instrument.
But luckily we decided the world is a better place when we teach each other how to play instruments so we still do it.
I feel the same about writing.

I don't agree with everything Derek says here, but he definitely gets a lot right. The presentation is about 45 minutes and the other half hour is a Q & A session.

I see every new piece of art or fiction as a small miracle. We live in a society where most people’s time is eaten up just trying to survive and pay the bills. We are told art has little value. Yet artists persevere and still find ways to create. That’s incredible.

Argh. One of my partitions on an HDD is giving me the error "drive is not accessible the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" (and my usual tools didn't fix it). Luckily, it's not my C: drive.
