The @ligo.org and @egovirgo.bsky.social collaborations officially announced the first direct detection of gravitational waves #OTD in 2016.

Hard to believe we are ten (ten!) years into the gravitational wave era of astronomy and astrophysics. A remarkable tool for understanding our Universe. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️

It’s been 10 years since the discovery of GWs was announced to the world! ✨

It’s also Intl Day of Women & Girls in Sci 💜

Here’s something to celebrate both—a symposium ft. women in GW science! 👩‍💻

"Interaction with police" holy hell

I am absolutely disgusted.

The police used excessive force. And even so, PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO PROTEST! Police were throwing around folks that were peacefully protesting!

Shame on you NSW Police, and Chris Minns for defending these actions.

There’s going to be a whole lot of politicians and high-level officials in front of the cameras today after the really disturbing and disgusting behaviour of the Police at yesterday’s protests.

I dunno, but inviting a guy who signs his name on bombs, is gonna kinda trigger people 🤷🏼‍♂️

I'll use this as an opportunity to re-share my space artists starter pack. Several of them take commissions and have worked on images for scientific press releases before. Astronomer colleagues, I encourage you to work with real artists for press releases for important results!

go.bsky.app/T9Xcq1M
Typically it's the authors rather than the journal who provide images for press releases, so I can't put too much blame on RAS, but absolutely! There are so many artists, many with a science background, who can produce beautiful images often for a fraction of the article publication costs.

What a mess! 😵‍💫
⁉️The ARC has delayed outcomes of ALL grants 1–4 months & increased scheduled outcome windows from 2 weeks to 3 months!

This reverses 4 years of progress in providing greater certainty & ability to plan for researchers, their families & unis.

Their excuse? Security checks under new ARC legislation👇
January 12, 2026 at 4:52 PM
Haha… hahaha… ha…

I have no words…
ARC’s new schedule is at www.arc.gov.au/funding-rese...

It will now take A YEAR, or more, for researchers to know whether their grants are successful or not.

For example, early-career researchers are to submit DECRA proposals 11 March this year but they may not be announced 'til 9 March NEXT YEAR!
January 12, 2026 at 4:41 PM

A good objective for all of us to see how low this number can get if we really put some effort in. We got a factor of two after Port Arthur — I’d want to see at least an order of magnitude now

What is the best black hole? 🤔

I spent my Thursday night having a very unserious debate with some colleagues at @ozgrav.bsky.social about this.

My vote? Cygnus X-1 🖤

And here’s why. I DARE you to disagree 🔥

(this debate was totally worth hopping on a call at 9pm)

The icon. The first candidate. ✨

I think some folks missed the memo and named gravitational wave events. Like hang on folks, this is about the best black hole, not the best black hole pair 🤣

I will be putting forward a case today on the last @ozgrav.bsky.social -wide call for the year to debate:

What is the best black hole? 🖤

So… does anyone have a strong opinion on the best black hole? 👀

(And to clarify, this is not me saying black holes are the best. Neutron stars are, Ok?!)
