I’m crouched at the base of the well filling up one of my buckets when I freeze. Crunches fall on the soft tall weeds. Each one exactly as far apart from one another, even, slow. My body doesn’t let me move. I don’t know how that ever helped anyone survive—the point where you’re so afraid, all you can do is stay still, as if the fanged thing that sees you shivering in the grass is going to think you’re a rock instead of a rabbit. I watch it come closer, the thing from my dream, its long legs ticking toward me like the swing of a clock’s arm. The twilight unable to touch the brilliant white of its cloaks. I can’t see an inch of skin, and I can’t breathe or think, and I can’t run. I’m going to let it get close enough, and it will do whatever it’s going to, and when Alcie finds my dried-up husk she’ll curse herself because obviously I was never strong enough to make it out here alone and she should have sent me in a group. I’m going to die and I won’t even be used properly. I’ll be “such a shame.” That’s the fate, the fairness, that my judge has decided for me. I’ll become what I did. A waste. The ghost is here.

One of the most common spells a waterwitch uses is a spoken bath. Just submerge your patient entirely in one big potion.
“And it worked…?” I hear her mutter, just barely. I grind my teeth and dig my knuckles into my eyes. “…No.” Alcie is quiet. I don’t suppose I expect her to tell me things like ‘I told you so’ or ‘you knew it wouldn’t,’ but I think it might have been better. I’m not sure why, but whenever she’s disappointed in me and doesn’t say so out loud, I always try to make her. “No. I wasted it,” I repeat, but she still doesn’t yell at me, and I start getting desperate. Just break it, already, so we can see through. “I wasted the spell and Ennai’s blessing. I wasted most of my medicine bag. It didn’t work.” “Ennai blessed you,” she says. She sounds…dazed. And now I shut up. I knew this was bad, but I’ve never managed to do anything that makes Alcie afraid before. “What did they…say?” I recount my meeting with the death god in front of a blackened birdbath at a murder scene. She makes me go through each detail of it, and by the end I’m shivering in the water. In only ten minutes or less, I’ve sapped the bath’s warmth. Unnaturally quick. “…It’s gone cold,” I complain. “Get out, then.” She’s growling as she gets up. “Summoned Ennai. Cold bath, what a horror—fucking called down the Deer of Death for a chat and a handshake, but the bath’s cold.” I feel a bit better because that’s much more normal of her.

Oh this is a great prompt for Caspen. Here's how much people fear the kind of thrall he is.
The name people gave them is “ghost children” because it's like being killed by a ghost. It might as well be the wind that takes you, a draft under the door come to sweep away your breath and leave the shell of you sitting in your rocking chair still holding your knitting. Walls of any thickness don't stop them, if you ask the departed senator in Castletown who spent thousands on an underground bunker, only to be found inside it with his vacant eyes still fixed diligently on the crooked treasury reports on his desk. One man was found standing in his wheatfield. Every day the young mail page would pass his farm at seven in the morning, glance out over the gently bobbing feathers of gold, and see Farmer Harlen with his scythe out in the middle of the field. Only on the fourth day did the page notice he'd been in the exact same spot each time, and on the fifth day he went up to shoo crows off the old man's shoulder and ask him why none of the wheat had gone down. It was because the scythe was occupied holding his board-stiff corpse upright. We witches sometimes get asked whether we have anything to protect against that great ghoulish thing that had grown from the first night at the first tavern where the snowball of a rumor is first packed. If fear is high, it's like fresh powder on the ground, and fear has been high ever since the prince got stolen. I always have to tell them that unless you're a newborn baby or a well that needs cleansing, there isn't a lot I can do for you. Children who are ghosts already are beyond my hands.

Actually wrote this for a fanfic but I like it a lot
It’s a hard thing, to discover that you are not intrinsically everything for them, the source of any resource they may seek, the one they turn to in totality of need. But maybe that sort of thing is the type of love that can only exist when people weave it into tapestries, sculpt it into idols kept on pedestals in hopeless hearts. The odds of two people meeting, and loving one another, AND not having to do any work to support each other is astronomical to the degree of stupid. In reality, all one needs to do, if they love someone, is be willing to learn how best to do so. "There is nothing I wouldn't learn for you."
