Honoring Dr Teresa Bowman with the Ruth L. Gottesman Award for Scientific Advancement
The 71st Spirit of Achievement Awards Luncheon honored Teresa Bowman, PhD, Chair of the Department of Developmental and Molecular Biology (DMB) at Albert Einstein College of Medicine for her leading-edge research using zebrafish to study blood systems in search of a cure for blood cancers. Dr. Bowman is also a Professor of DMB, of Oncology, and of Medicine at Einstein. She is also a member of the Ruth L. and David S. Gottesman Institute for Stem Cell Research and Regenerative Medicine and a member of Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Bowman’s research focuses on understanding how blood stem cells form, how they function, and how their dysfunction contributes to blood cancers. Her lab uses a highly integrative strategy combining zebrafish genetics, human cell culture, and genomics approaches to better understand basic cellular functions and how diseases such as myelodysplastic syndrome arise. She is a dedicated mentor and advocate to scientists of all ages from high school students to junior faculty.
