We've known about ME for decades.
#MEAwarenessMonth
#MEAwarenessMonth – Day 2
1986, Dr Ramsay published the first definition of ME. He described a unique form of fatigability, that must be present for a diagnosis. He warned against relapses from overexertion, rejected psychological theories and pointed to biomedical causes.

Covid has taught us so much about airborne disease spread (and how to prevent it).

We need to put that knowledge to work to slow the spread of COVID, measles & other pathogens.

Clean air, ventilation and well fitted respirators provide extra layers.

Measles in Texas, bird flu in Louisiana, tuberculosis in Kansas and Covid everywhere. Public health has been dying a slow death for years, we can’t count on it anymore. What can we count on? A mask!

The telegraph has been decrying the death of the (white) male writer for years. Meanwhile, as I rearranged the new-in nature hardbacks on wed night I realised I had 4 displays shelves all by men - 90% white men - mostly on birds. All interesting books, but (!). It was partly a fluke of timing.
A characteristically strange take from today’s Telegraph. Not sure the state of the nation novel can be said to have died a death when Andrew O’Hagan’s Caledonian Road is selling by the truckload.

Nature reports that the National Science Foundation has stopped awarding new grants and allotting funds to existing ones. All of them. @colincarlson.bsky.social says that unless the freeze is lifted, it “is going to destroy people's labs.” 2/10

Imagine telling researchers on the frontlines of cancer, infection, or rare disease that their work is now considered ‘entitlement’ 🤷🏼‍♂️

These aren’t handouts - they’re investments in health, innovation, and lives

This chart should alarm every single one of us 📉
See this chart for one stark example: NIH funding has dramatically slowed down.

Grant awards are down *$3 billion* so far, compared to same time period last year

I asked the White House to explain.

“This is not a researcher entitlement program,” said an official, defending their new approach.

I said this on the other site, but I think the media needs to stop using the word “arrested” if a person hasn’t committed any crimes, hasn’t been read Miranda rights, hasn’t been formally charged with anything and their family and lawyer doesn’t know where they are. It’s kidnapping. It’s abduction.

“Imagine that this disease comes from a common virus – one so common you might catch it at the supermarket, at school, or on the bus. Imagine that recent studies have shown that this virus – the one that’s everywhere you go – can linger in your body for more than a year after infection.“
It’s Long COVID Awareness Day, and I want to thank @zeteo.com for inviting me to write about it!

Politicians & media can’t keep pushing endless COVID reinfections as an acceptable condition of our “new normal”- while failing to communicate the risks.

Hi, just a reminder that when you use Libro.fm for your audiobooks, you support independent bookshops vs. large corporations that drive them out of business.

We also pay taxes. And so do indie bookshops.

If you think this is something that only concerns the global south, you may want to pick up a good book.

Actually practically any book older than about 80 years will do.
People have no idea how scary this is. XDR-TB is virtually untreatable.

Even if you don’t care about others should you support combating infectious disease elsewhere.

Pathogens know no borders nor care about your beliefs.
