Needless deaths are what's at risk. SCOTUS, much like the Presidency, seems influenced by those who fund them, unable to challenge their benefactors.

One more note to this bracing essay: the US Constitution, while not being very old, is nonetheless the oldest of all current democratic charters. Democracy is a very new thing in the world, and not deeply rooted.
