We never thought we’d get to see them living in their own home. But on a recent trip to Kruger Park, South Africa, we were fortunate to see a scene I’ll never forget.
The Matriarch appeared out of the bush and slowly led her small elephant herd across the river.

A leaked draft of legislation for MPAs that nearly passed in 2024 indicates that the government is taking a minimalist approach with low ambition for restoration of marine life.

Why are our marine 'protected' areas still nothing more than lines on maps?

Cladonia fimbriata is very common #lichen in Britain, but how splendid to see in such profusion! Distinguished from other similar pixie-cups by 'golf-tee' shape, and by surface of uniformly farinose i.e. 'powdery' soredia. On moss on calcareous drystone wall, Normanby-le-Wold, Lincolnshire, England.

The fossil record preserves bones, not biodiversity.
But extinction happens at the scale of bacteria, fungi, mosses, microfauna, parasites, soil invertebrates.
Entire kingdoms of life disappear without leaving a mark.

As the June 2025 heat intensified I was out looking at arable habitats in Hampshire. Annual Knawel Scleranthus annuus was last recorded at this site in 2013, so it was great to find it still persisting. Not a common plant at all now. @bsbibotany.bsky.social
