But a distinctive desire of many contemporary audiences to have their pop culture consumption also form the basis of their moral/political identity, and be validated thereby (since the stakes are now: if it is not one is evil!) just leads to very shakey over-reads of these things.

As I argue in Philosophy of Antifascism, Sartre and Beauvoir both had important things to say on this point, although they really would have benefited from engaging Du Bois's work (which wouldn't have been beyond the realm of possibility given their friendship with Richard Wright).
The discourse around Elon Musk's Nazi salutes (including now Musk using it to make Nazi "jokes") reminds me of the always relevant Sartre quote on anti-Semites. It is all a game to the far right, meant to push the boundaries of what is considered normal and socially acceptable.

I need folks to stop saying other folks deserve to suffer cause they got taken by a scam. Nobody deserves to suffer because they got preyed upon and lacked the capacities to avoid being exploited. It’s not worth habituating yourself into that way of thinking for a few hits of happy chemicals.
