A person in Washington State who kept backyard poultry has died from #H5N5 #flu. The person was the first known infection with this subtype of flu globally & the second recorded death in the US from an #H5 flu virus. Health authorities say there's no evidence the person spread the virus to others.

Never underestimate what individuals can do to change the course of these events. Awareness of the consequences of such agreements among the masses can empower policymakers to stand their ground.

Really enjoyed this piece from @adamjkucharski.bsky.social on the culture war between broad social improvements and targeted scientific understanding as ways to improve health.

It’s frustrating because obviously both are important—but the former is often portrayed as somehow more worthy.

"The NIH... supported 99 percent of the drugs approved in the U.S. from 2010 to 2019. The agency has had a hand in “nearly all of our major medical breakthroughs over the past several decades,”

The NIH is in a struggle for its (and our) lives. This is existential to America:

Today is one of those days where it is very clear all of us have a role in the universe. Whether it is to create, serve, nurture, or caution, we make daily choices that will determine this role, which is inherently relative to the perspective taken. #randomthoughts

Important read for anyone who is living with conditions that limit the amount of energy (or spoons) one has in daily living. We can’t change the past, but we can live mindfully in the present to prepare for a better future.

My impression of academic conferences in public health now is there is generally more solidarity in sharing experiences and expertise. There is also a lot more humility in recognising the role of study participants, field staff and laboratory technicians who produce the data used to inform policy.
