1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

The cruelty of this order to reverse SNAP distribution is insane.
Republicans are for “state’s rights” when that means promoting segregation and tormenting LGBTQ folks.

When state’s rights means feeding your state’s residents, they are all in for the federal government ensuring starvation.
The US Department of Agriculture has ordered that "states must immediately undo any steps taken to issue full SNAP benefits for November 2025".

Well I've been living under a rock (but maybe that's what finishing a dissertation is) because I had no idea #NaNoWriMo was gone. They've faced plenty of issues, but I've done Nanowrimo off and on since 2015. What a loss.

Disturbing news out of Auburn University, where the admin is pressuring professors to sign a statement saying they're complying with an "anti-DEI" law and TPUSA is holding a rally and trying to record classes.

I hear faculty are terrified to sign, worried this is a pretense for mass firings.

Auburn's provost office posted a web site on how to comply with state and federal DEI mandates on Oct. 31.

Darn I thought the spicy take would be a critique of #AcWriMo that would let me off the hook.

Realizing 3 days in that it's #NaNoWriMo/ #AcWriMo! A writing challenge does wonders to motivate my lizard brain... but this year, I really need to think through what would actually be sustainable for me.

Any ideas for adapting/scaling NaNoWriMo welcome!

Revisiting Kaba's "We Do This 'Til We Free Us" as my race & ethnicity class heads into our policing & prisons unit.

It's one of my favorite units because while there are still no easy solutions, there's so much to learn from ongoing abolitionist organizing.

Mutual aid should be a threat to the state, not a substitute for its “failures.” It is saying “the state does not do this & will not do this because it is built to oppress & exploit.” Mutual aid is a radical act of caring for each other outside of those systems of oppression.

This could happen in front of any of us at any time. We can't afford to only bear witness.

Look up your local immigrant justice organization. Do the Know Your Rights trainings. Take bystander intervention training (any kind can help). We outnumber them, always.

A+ post.

In a related vein, I wish people would also consider the ways in which Islamophobic tropes also contribute to and reinforce antisemitism as well. That's not good for Jews either, in the long run!

I couldn't be more on board with this. Focusing on corruption/fraud/misconduct at the level of individual scientist appears to be misguided and counterproductive when systemic forces and selection biases are at play. This appears to be true even beyond the context of industry manipulation.
Science has faced these challenges before. However, many think manipulation happens through corruption of scientists. Instead, we highlighted a broader range of mechanisms:

-Burying Internal research
-Selectively publishing
-Design bias
-Selective funding and access.

Last week, the Indiana University administration asked their student newspaper not to print any news stories in the Homecoming edition. When the faculty advisor refused, IU fired him and ended paper printing. So students at the Purdue paper printed the IU edition and drove it down to Bloomington!

Ever wonder why so few athletes in North America have spoken about Israel's genocide in Gaza?

We did too... so we asked some to find out.

Answers include "fear of losing sponsorships," "the McCarthyist response from government,” and “Zionists gaslighting and doxxing people."
