Day 11:

Yeah, time flies.

It flies when Eddie fights for the future in BLUE SKIES, it flies when Annie grows up over and over AGAIN in FROM NOW ON, and it flies when you throw a clock out the window in my favorite dad joke.

What is a song lyric that changed your life?

"No one can find the rewind button, girl, so cradle your head in your hands and breathe"
"it ain't no sin to be glad you're alive"

Convincing you to read my short story by the first sentence. Share yours if you want.

"If you're reading this, I'm probably already dead."
Convincing you to read my novel by the first sentence. Share yours if you want. (It's not out in the world yet but...)

"It's only when I hear the screaming that it occurs to me to run."
Convincing you to read my novel by the first sentence. Share yours if you want.

"Somewhere, this could all be happening right now."

If you've read BLUE SKIES, you probably know what moment I'm thinking of.

Day 9:

For BLUE SKIES, I looked up the physics of firing a gun while skydiving.

For FROM NOW ON, I researched hypothetical plans for destroying or redirecting an incoming asteroid.

For, you know, reasons.

I don't condone all of his tactics, but Killmonger had a good noble goal, and he kind of won in the end.

It's nuts. I can feel it everywhere I go in this city. Everybody in every neighborhood is exhausted, traumatized, and on alert, ready to protect our neighbors.

I don't go anywhere without a whistle and a fully charged phone these days.
“I want you to understand what it is like to live in Chicago during this time.”

This made me cry. In a good way.

Everywhere I go in Chicago, I can feel neighbors looking out for neighbors. Whistles, signs, honking. There's a tension in the air, but there's resilience and love too. We're all running toward danger together.
“The regime wants all of us afraid. It is counting on fear immobilizing us and perhaps even turning us against each other. Instead, what we are currently seeing in Chicago is that solidarity can overcome fear and can give people the courage and tenacity to fight for each other.” --Mariame Kaba
In Chicago, We Run Toward Danger Together
"Faced with unrelenting state violence, Chicagoans have refused to be cowed," says Mariame Kaba.

She began by quoting from Carl Sandberg’s famed poem, “Chicago,” which gave the city the ubiquitous nickname “City of Big Shoulders,” pausing to look up as she read the line: “And having answered so I turn once more to those who sneer at this my city, and I give them back the sneer.”
