Programming is both a means of learning & discovery & a medium for communication. It's inevitably at odds with itself--we're trying to both saying things clearly & concisely & at the same time learning new concepts that we can't possibly express clearly & concisely because we just learned them.

The artisanal metaphor was probably better in many ways.

Many of our styles, techniques, patterns and practices are far more like artistic schools than engineering.

And that is just an amazing list.
I've added @wouterla.bsky.social book "The Product Owner’s Guide to Escaping Legacy" to the Awesome Legacy System list. The book guides product owners through the challenges of modernizing legacy systems.

Wondering how to get started with #DomainDrivenDesign? A simple first step: when your stakeholders share user stories or business rules, ask them for a concrete example. Dig into the details—think about a specific persona, a customer’s name, or exact figures. Avoid abstract descriptions. 1/3

I got lucky with my first novel. That luck has echoed through the rest of my career. If that first novel had been released a year earlier or later, who's to say what would have happened. Some folks get annoyed when I mention how much luck has played into my success. But I know the truth.
Hot Publishing Take: You can write an A+ book, but unless it gets huge publisher support or gets randomly lucky, it won't be seen as successful. Publisher support is a $ decision you can't impact; luck depends on viral social media/celebrity endorsement. All we can do is keep writing and hope.
