Electrification could now reach 75% of all energy demand, as the road-transport and heating sectors rapidly electrify 🔥🚗

These two sectors account for 50% of global energy use and are now ready to switch from fossil molecules to clean electrons.

Always interesting to see this come up again 😄

Our Nature paper didn’t “redefine” collapse — there’s no single threshold, though ~6 Sv is common.

We used 0 Sv only for extreme 4×CO₂ runs (full shutdown).

Under real-world forcing, models stay above 6 Sv this century — no collapse.

@kencaldeira.com
Sorry to bother you Ken but I was just wondering your own thoughts on the debate in regards to the warming rate debate?

bsky.app/profile/glen...
The best estimate rate of human-induced warming of 0.27°C per decade for 2015–2024, up from 0.2°C in IPCC AR6:
1. 0.03°C from changing the rounding precision
2. 0.03°C from methodological & dataset updates
3. 0.01°C due to a real increase in rate

"Discussions and frameworks for reducing methane, which is magnitudes more potent than CO2 in the short-term, have been far less common — but the potential impact could be huge."

A huge amount of new generating capacity is expected in the US this year, and about half of that is solar, with a small fraction of natural gas (no coal).
This would be the highest ever annual addition to US capacity (prev. peak before graph starts is mid-70s at ~40GW).

NEW: i spoke to nine (!) scientists across several disciplines whose work was cited in the new Department of Energy report that downplays the severity of climate change. all of them say their work was misrepresented, cherry picked, and/or lacked context —
Scientists Say New Government Climate Report Twists Their Work
A new Department of Energy report “fundamentally misrepresents” climate research and leaves out key context, multiple scientists cited in the report tell WIRED.

Worried about the latest climate sensitivity estimates from paleoclimate? Don't be.

Oh My, Oh Miocene!
A recent paper suggested that 'climate sensitivity' derived from a new paleo-CO2 record is around 7.2ºC (for equilibrium climate sensitivity ECS) and ~13.9ºC (Earth System Sensitivity - ESS) for a dou...
