A reminder that when the Sycamore Gap tree was cut down people immediately started blaming immigrants and teenagers...

It was neither. It was two white Englishmen in their 30s.

tired: SignalGate

@wired.com: The Signal clone, TeleMessage—which Mike Waltz appeared to use in a Reuters photo—has been hacked. And Customs and Border Protection also confirmed it used TeleMessage.

Welp.
Customs and Border Protection Confirms Its Use of Hacked Signal Clone TeleMessage
After a hacker reportedly stole data from TeleMessage Signal that included references to CBP, the agency has now confirmed that it used the app but has now “disabled” it as a “precautionary measure.”

And this is why due process, and requiring the government to justify to a judge *why* they grabbed you off the street and stuck you in jail, matters
So therefore the court finds that she does not pose danger to community or present risk of flight.

THE COURT ORDERS THE GOVERNMENT TO RELEASE OZTURK FROM CUSTODY IMMEDIATELY.

"Ms. Ozturk is free to return to her home in Massachusetts."

Tomorrow’s going to be a good stress test of the press. El Salvadoran President Bukele will visit the White House. At the press availability, every Q ought to be about Abrego Garcia: where is he now? Did US ask you to return him? etc. WH will hate, maybe try to prevent, so all should band together.

Don't let Donald's tariff stupidity distract you from talking about the Signal security lapse at the Pentagon that put our troops in danger. The media may have forgotten about it, but the voters have not. And we can multitask our criticisms.

The problem is, none of this is breaking through to ‘regular’ low-information people. If we don’t figure out how to do that quickly, I’m not sure we have a chance to stop this momentum.
Remember Fiona Hill? She’s now sounding the alarm again: “We’re definitely on a path toward full-on state repression. There’s no question about it. I’ve thought about this for an extraordinarily long time.” When Fiona speaks, we should all listen.

My evening thought is that I suspect a great many Americans, in the period after 1989, grew very used to a world in which it didn't matter *that* much who they elected (to them).

They had the rule of law, the most prosperous economy in human history, the long peace.

But it always mattered.

The IRS unit that audits ultrawealthy earners has lost 38% of its employees this year.

This will starve the government of revenue by making it easier for the rich to evade taxes — which the top 1% already do to the tune of $163B a year.

See what DOGE is really about?

Tariffs are like lingerie - meant to protect the goods, but mostly just make things more complicated and expensive for everyone trying to get in.
