2025 was even more disruptive in the public health sphere than I could have envisaged. As we look to 2026, I think we need to expect more chaos and more efforts to dismantle policies and systems meant to keep people safe. www.statnews.com/2025/12/26/p...
3 issues to watch in public health in 2026
What might 2026 hold for the fields of public health, both domestically and abroad? Quite a lot.

There's a lot of focus right now on a person's right to choose whether to be vaccinated. But the risks falling vaccination rates pose to individuals — especially young babies, the elderly & the immunocompromised — need to be part of that discussion. www.statnews.com/2025/12/23/v...
4 questions to understand the costs of ‘medical freedom’
The choice that one person makes not to vaccinate has real costs — financial and otherwise — for their neighbors.

One gets the impression AG Sulzberger is for it too and thats a big part of why we're getting this too cute by half framing about JD "I wont apologize for being white" Vance
the most notable thing JD Vance has done in the last five years is tell vicious racist lies about immigrants. If you think he hasn't taken a side on bigotry, you are an idiot. He's for it. He's very strongly for it.

Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

A recent poll found that about half of young people believe that individuals who do their own research can know as much as a doctor. Health-care providers need to help patients see the value of science and medicine in their lives, Dhruv Khullar writes. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/NGeSFQ
The Role of Doctors Is Changing Forever
Some patients don’t trust us. Others say they don’t need us. It’s time for us to think of ourselves not as the high priests of health care but as what we have always been: healers.

Yes, it’s illegal. Like changing it to Department of War, like ten thousand other things. Part of the Trump strategy is to break the law and convey “the rule of law is weak and feminine and laughable and should be overridden by Our Guy.” Trump is fundamentally anti-law.

It’s obvious that *before this week* Trump had never heard about Venezuela nationalizing its oil industry (in 1976!) but now it’s a casus belli in a shitshow that makes the 2002-03 run-up to invading Iraq look like a model of planning, preparation, and logic.
Trump on Venezuela: "Getting land, oil rights, whatever we had -- they took it away because we had a president that maybe wasn't watching. But they're not gonna do that. We want it back. They took our oil rights. We had a lot of oil there. They threw our companies out. And we want it back."

If I had ONE tip for librarians testing "Ai search" products is focus on relevancy. If you had time for just one query , test with a "tricky query". There is no one defintion of tricky, but a query that can easily return dozens/hundreds of relevant articles is definitely pointless to test! (1)
