Excellent, thorough work.
I'll add that designing crossing points so that the safest, least oblique crossing is the most convenient, most direct crossing route would help. At Haymarket, Queensferry St, the Mound, South St Andrew St etc. the narrow line of red paint is never on the line I would take.

None of this makes me particularly confident about diversions and alternative provisions for cyclists and pedestrians should the money appear for the northern tram extension to proceed along the Roseburn.

Similarly, whilst there are actual guidelines for contractors which ask that they don't block footways with large metal signs informing road users about works on the roadway, there are frequently large metal signs still blocking footways.

Related to this the have the ongoing issues with lack of alternative provision for pedestrian and cycle diversions until there's been a significant build-up of complaint. The few occasions where these have been resolved (and have stayed resolved) are remarkable as exceptions.

Whilst I'd prefer a flat surface without recurring skiddy mud patches or concealed craters, this is not a complaint about the path, but an indication of the apparent impossibility of getting contractors to do stuff properly or make good their mess when cycle facilities are involved.

Further north is the curved rut over Craigleith Drive and the loose brick rattle-strips at the Craigleith junction. Further round the path we have EdinCORE's poorly-filled trenches from their fibre installation, the recurring puddle under Granton Road, the rattly bit by the Boswall Place access.

#EdTravCyc It was also not possible to get from the CCWEL to Shandwick Pl without dismounting and traipsing over the footway, due to barriers placed outside the traffic lane for vehicles turning from Dalry Road to Palmerston Place which ignored the possibility of cycles emerging from Haymarket Tce

As well as being in the right place to safely cross the tracks and avoid other hazardous bits of crumbling surface it also felt safer for the pedestrians struggling their way across the multiple islands for a cyclist to be at the head of the queue.

When Haymarket re-opened following the tramworks I felt the need to deliberately study it and cycle across a few different ways on each journey to and from work to find the safest lanes to be in, what the signal sequence was, how long a bargepole to keep between me and the taxi jughandle etc.

But, when it's usable, it's very usable.

At night, it's dark, it's isolated, there are long stretches between access points, and sometimes long stretches between working lights. I am very wary about using it at night, even with the advantage of being on a fast bike, knowing all the nearest escape points and where I would emerge.

After storms, fallen trees can wait weeks before being cleared. Gritting can be infrequent or absent. Foliage trimming is rare, unless someone has recently disposed of a firearm. Problems with persistent puddles have taken years to fix, as did sections of the path suffering from root heave.

It is far from perfect. In the autumn, it's slippy with fallen leaves. In the winter, it's icy. It can be infested with oaves, particularly around school holidays, and I can count on the fingers of two mittened hands the times I've seen police patrolling it on foot.

Since the threat of losing the path resurfaced, I've popped along it at every opportunity. I've been meaning to go along the equivalent on-road routes for comparison, but haven't yet done so, as it's just such an unpleasant journey in comparison.

Where it is absolutely invaluable is the reverse - the uphill from Granton or following the NEPN round from Leith, where the gentle slope doesn't feel very up and can be ridden at your own speed, without any revving noises from behind, without having to stop and lose momentum at traffic lights.
November 12, 2025 at 9:09 PM
Even with the occasional wait behind a walker, jogger, or slower cyclist, it's so direct and convenient (and without any vehicle-favouring road crossings) that you can get from the West End down to Granton in ten minutes, with barely any effort.

They could have found and paid a live human to do the voiceover, complete with the swithering accent and timbral variations, if that's the effect they wanted. Copying the swift jumps between hemispheres could even be an exercise for accent and dialect coaches of the future.

Near the end there's a sentence where it flips for single words at a time.
It reminded me of an audio sketch from years ago with S. Fry, E. Thompson and J. Broadbent where they mashed together different accents: youtu.be/ElHi9lg4adg?...
