Bipedal ape with gingery beard, frown, grey hair. Cycles, walks, takes photos. Likes cold, dislikes social situations and long trousers. he/him
Excellent, thorough work.
I'll add that designing crossing points so that the safest, least oblique crossing is the most convenient, most direct crossing route would help. At Haymarket, Queensferry St, the Mound, South St Andrew St etc. the narrow line of red paint is never on the line I would take.

If you visit the Roseburn path today you can still see the marks left by the drill/core-sampling survey from September 2006 at the shoulder of the wiggle just south of the bridge over the A8. I still try and avoid going directly over that point as it's still uneven enough to feel like a skid risk.

It is far from perfect. In the autumn, it's slippy with fallen leaves. In the winter, it's icy. It can be infested with oaves, particularly around school holidays, and I can count on the fingers of two mittened hands the times I've seen police patrolling it on foot.

Since the threat of losing the path resurfaced, I've popped along it at every opportunity. I've been meaning to go along the equivalent on-road routes for comparison, but haven't yet done so, as it's just such an unpleasant journey in comparison.

Where it is absolutely invaluable is the reverse - the uphill from Granton or following the NEPN round from Leith, where the gentle slope doesn't feel very up and can be ridden at your own speed, without any revving noises from behind, without having to stop and lose momentum at traffic lights.

Even with the occasional wait behind a walker, jogger, or slower cyclist, it's so direct and convenient (and without any vehicle-favouring road crossings) that you can get from the West End down to Granton in ten minutes, with barely any effort.

At the height of summer, the Roseburn Path can often be crowded, but I have never ever left the path to use an alternative road route. It's a nice path to have to take a little extra time on.

Shortly after the #FutureTrams consultation launched I saw a comment somewhere about tight radii on the non-Roseburn route, which a crude mashup of some rotated screenshots from the council atlas (cityofedinburgh.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappv...) of the two St Andrew Square turns hopefully dispels.

There's something about the colours and font which makes me think of removal lorries...

I've finally started filling in the tram consultation, though still haven't had time to read anywhere near all of the documents open in my huge group of browser tabs.

I had no idea this was returning to cinemas. I should hopefully be able to find some time to get to one next week.

Not ideal is the new kerb to access the WoL path from the resurfaced Sandport bridge. Previously, there was a half-hearted dropped kerb too far to the west, with a rounded, wheel-deflecting kerb at where wheels would generally meet it. Now, there's an angled wheel-deflecting kerb, even further west.

Still a fair amount of plastic barriers lying around and the road surface is awful but Abbey Lane is now mostly passable by pedal cycle #EdTravCyc

Meanwhile, over on Instagram, VoiTechnology posts about "6,000 e-bikes rolling out very soon".

Four weeks, trapped in this tiny city-centre area. Still no sign of expansion. Outside the geofence, normal non-hire-scheme pedal cycles (both manual and electrically-assisted) go about their business, free to travel more widely.

Diverted traffic, but inconvenienced pedestrians at a very busy crossing. @edinburghcouncil.bsky.social

They have crossed the Water of Leith in two places: two fresh rogue bikes on Queensferry Road and North Junction Street. Elsewhere, the one in Broomhouse is still there, whilst those which were out along the canal are either now out of power, concealed, or hopefully retrieved.

New escape attempt, this time to the west, where not constrained by the sea.

None in Atholl Crescent. None in the zone.

Both bikes on Jane St have their rear lights flashing intermittently. Is this their distress signal when improperly parked? I shifted one to get it off the footway and told the chat robot in the app, which takes significantly longer and more clicks and choices than is convenient.
September 10, 2025 at 8:30 AM
The construction encampment on Abbey Lane is finally starting to be cleared up - the section of constricted footway with no space on the road for cycles is now much shorter, though still narrow and there are still flatbeds and dumptrucks occasionally whooshing around the top section. #EdTravCyc

Are these VOI bikes being moved into the Leith area in preparation of the expansion of the operating zone?
September 10, 2025 at 6:22 AM
It was also very cramped, with so many bikes in such a restricted area. Fortunately, the single bike currently available has a lot more space.
