Reminder than the Dundee Street/Fountainbridge active travel improvement consultation closes on Monday 12th January 2026.

It only took me a couple of hours, working off notes made beforehand, but there were still a couple of bits I only noticed today.

#EdTravCyc Five Ways and most of the Chancelot Path completely iced, but there was a gritter heading east at Ainslie Park. Most of the WoL path between the Chancelot and Sandport clear apart from the Stedfastgate slope, the Sandport bridge and a patch at the bottom of the new W. Bowling Green slope

#EdTravCyc icy puddles along Leith Links paths and at the bottom of the slope to the Restalrig Railway Path. Puddles across the width of the bridges over the crematorium entrance. Findlay slope frosty but walkable.

I haven't checked recently but I recall a few gritbins at various points along the NEPN, though mostly recall them with the context of having reported them as either having been set aflame or just pushed over. There aren't any on the Restalrig Path, but there was one on the Fleming Place roundabout.

This seems reasonable for a calendar year's worth. Could have been 900 without the last week off due to visiting family and catching the snots, and/or the holiday-gap in July, and/or the break in May when I caught plantar fasciitis after switching trainers, but it doesn't _need_ to be anything...

If you haven't done the Dundee St/Fountainbridge consultation yet (consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/dundee-s..., closes 2026-01-12), don't leave it too late as there are twenty-odd plan segments to consider and lots of narrow/right-angled/toy-town cycling structures to request de-Picardifying

Also, give your chain and gears a defensive oiling with a proper viscous 'wet' lube prior to heading out onto salty/gritted roads, then a cleansing skoosh as soon as you remember to when getting back in - even just rinsing the worst of the salt off the chain with what's left in your water bottle.
Not sure your tyres are right for winter riding?

From wider tyres & lower pressures to winter compounds & studded options for snow & ice, this guide explains what to consider as conditions change

Fallen trees and lost branches would take weeks to clear away after storms, with the chopped bits left at the sides of the road for dimwit miscreants to put back in the way.
Each road may be gritted up to a maximum of once every calendar year; likewise verge trimming.
Unswept wet leaves for all.

#EdTravCyc PUNCTURE WARNING - two reports on citycyclingdinburgh.info of glass-fragment punctures between Craigleith and Drylaw. If you frequently use the bike paths, a flat wallpaper paste brush can fit in almost any bag. bsky.app/profile/wing...
Looking for a last-minute stocking-filler for people who cycle? A cheap wallpaper paste brush is small and flat enough to tuck into a bag or pannier but is ideal for brushing the worst bits of patches of smashed glass bottles to the edges of cycle paths, hopefully preventing the occasional puncture.

#EdTravCyc Possibly be slightly careful at the Seafield Lidl cycle parking shelter - it's sort of taped off a bit, yet still usable, though it's not clear if there is danger from the shelter, or the fence behind, or the gravel at the foot of the fence...
