The Africa Cup of Nations starts in two weeks – and the fact it’s been shunted into this Christmas slot is a disgrace.

Africa Cup of Nations shunted into margins as greedy game finds no room at top table | Jonathan Wilson
So long as the Premier League invests in its players and Fifa pays it lip service, the continent’s flagship tournament will always struggle to fit in

It feels bad that I can only find Bristol City team news on a fascist website or on a Reach website.

I really did enjoy Saturday and am looking forward to tonight. But there's a weird tendency I'm already noticing amongst City fans to use one performance to chuck Liam Manning - quantifiably our most successful manager in nigh-on a generation! - under the bus.

They also sing Love Will Tear Us Apart very poorly. Curtis didn't bark out the first word of the chorus like that. He crooned it.
Every single football song from the 60s or early 70s is rubbish. Fact. And that includes "Marching On Together". #bcfc #lufc #coyr

Spent the evening amongst happy City fans singing the same songs about home support being shit as I heard Millwall sing in the reverse fixture in August. Shouldn't we just have an amnesty? Accept that away fans are louder everywhere for lots of reasons, junk the chants, and move on with our lives?

Genuinely surprised MOTD has opened tonight with Liverpool v Newcastle. Was expecting United-Ipswich on the basis that with the league dead, surely you just run the games entirely in order of entertainment.

Today's Premier League results are a hammer blow for those of us hoping for jeopardy - at either end of the table - going into April.

It's rubbish. The old format was rubbish, this is rubbish. There isn't a reformatting which solves the problem that European football is fundamentally uncompetitive and UEFA are just finding new ways to whittle things down to the same dozen teams.
Having finally solved my tech issues (thanks to someone involved!) I am actually not sure this works as well as a TV event as I thought.

Other than something acute, like City, it's almost goal/info overload. It's not immediately obvious what goals mean or if they matter.

The last film I watched was a David Lynch movie. The last TV show I watched - last night! - was a David Lynch show. A complete original. RIP.

Sure we've lost 3rd round replays and all that that means to lower league clubs but at least we've got a more convoluted Champions League group stage for us to not watch.

Off sick thoughts: in 1995, what on Earth were Cast playing at, releasing a chirpy indie song called Alright just months after Supergrass had scored a massive hit with... a chirpy indie song called Alright? Surely Cast must have known the world wasn't ready for two such efforts in such a short time.

Even by Barney Ronay's standards, which are high, this is exceptional. The cold fury and the moral clarity.

"Football is out there making death happen because this is politically and financially expedient."

Easy and long overdue decision after today’s charade:
Josimar will no longer publish a word about Fifa’s competitions from a sporting POV, but we will continue to cover it from a geopolitical, economic and human rights angle.

This CD player was my birthday present in 1997 along with the incomparable Fresh Hits 1997. I found it recently and COULD NOT BELIEVE how rich the sound was, after years of streaming Spotify on my phone. My column today is about this phenomenon, which I’m calling “qualitynesia” on.ft.com/3ZlwHf5
