OneCity has its first mayoral candidate for their primary: William Azaroff, the CEO of Brightside Community Homes Foundation, and board member of The Tyee, VIFF, and a bunch of other community endeavours.

People are broke, parks are falling apart, and Ken Sim is cutting the budget to the bone. Now isn’t the time for an unnecessary referendum.
My breaking file on the province requiring a referendum to kill Vancouver's Park Board.

Sim is avoiding criticism of the province on this decision — but he was originally hopeful to get rid of the park board in six months.

But he lost political capital, and the province wasn't inclined to help.
B.C. government says Vancouver requires a referendum to eliminate its park board | CBC News
The B.C. government has put forward legislation that would only allow the City of Vancouver to eliminate its independently elected parks board if it is approved by local voters in a referendum.

Rebecca Bligh voted to slash wages for workers, to block rental housing in wealthy neighbourhoods, and to oppose common sense tools to properly fund our schools.

We need a progressive mayor on the ballot to deliver the change Vancouver needs. And we’ll get one. More soon.
Vancouver councillor Rebecca Bligh makes official she will run for mayor next year under a new banner of “Vote Vancouver”.

Bligh was first elected in 2018 with the NPA, left them, joined Sim’s ABC Party and was re-elected, before she was booted from ABC, mostly on divisions over social issues.

Bligh has a decent amount of support from the province and feds (more than Sim or Allam at this point), which could help.

But her 6 years being a supporter of Ken Sim, and getting elected under both the NPA and ABC banners, means it’ll be difficult to get support from local left-wing parties.

So Global news is reporting that what a lot of people quietly suspected was the reason why the leader of a Canadian political party refused to get the security clearance necessary to read the report on foreign interference in canadian elections is … a darn good guess, actually:

My latest for @thetyee.ca. Growing up on Fox and seeing what can happen in Canada should concern us all, and question why one party wants to smash our sword before battle.
“During this election I see one party advocating for the defunding of Canada’s public broadcaster.

“Perhaps you need to have grown up with Fox News in your household to understand the urgency of this issue.”

We chose in part to raise our kids in Canada because they’re much safer from gun violence here than in the U.S. The last thing I want to see on city council is someone using NRA talking points. By-election turnout is always very low—if you live in Vancouver, PLEASE vote & keep this guy off council.
Ken Sim has been posturing for weeks about how he’s acting to improve public safety. Today, he’s running a candidate who is opposed to the national handgun freeze - a freeze that is SUPPORTED by the Vancouver Police Department.

I did some writing this week about the importance of our communities as we face the very real threat of annexation and bolster our Team Canada approach.
