There was also some idiocy with her doctor about giving her too much morphine as that's a bad thing, and I got a bit in his face and said that when this is over she'll be dead, not addicted. Scrip written, caregiver ushered politely out of office.
I was caregiver to a friend with terminal cancer. She was in agonizing pain; the visiting nurse refused pain meds because she thought suffering was good. I threatened to hang her by her ankles outside the (14th Fl) window. Friend got a shot but her sister screamed at me (the nurse quit). No regrets.
I once saw a woman with terminal cancer at an academic conference *advocating* on behalf of her doctor who had told her to "embrace pain acceptance" as a movement because prescribing opioids was wrong

Agree, this was quite the read. Different in a lot of ways, the ending did leave me wanting more story.

There was a version of this going around (unattributed, pls LMK) that had the wrong measurements and scale, but the image was so impactful I made my own corrected version. I think this really drives home the sheer massive, unstoppable scale of the freighter that hit the Key Bridge in Baltimore. 🖖
