Reading a book is like stealing an extra life from supply.

The books we read -- or films we watch, games we play, etc. -- speak to our deepest desires in the one life we actually have.

Why, then, do we so often feel shame in acknowledging those needs?

I step back and it feels utterly bizarre to me that it's somehow better to want to imagine heat vision than it is to want to imagine agency, relevance and connection.

Maybe because it is easier to acknowledge the lack of lasers than it is to speak to the lack of those other things.
