Episcopal Priest and member of the Anglican Order of Preachers living in Washington State. Sword fighting (HEMA) as a hobby, also hiking, mushrooms, TTRPGs, and occasionally bookbinding.
Bible take: 1) Colossians is genuinely Pauline. 2) there’s not a specific “false teaching” he’s addressing. It’s all various stuff from a real place with a lot going on by different people. 3) it was only written b/c he was writing to Philemon and needed to send the church something as well. ⚓️

One of the reasons that’s kept me from using EP C for a season is it lacks a Proper Preface. We have a few here who would like it used (it’s not my fav, but I’m willing) but unless I use it randomly then if I use it seasonally we never use a seasonal preface.

How do others use Prayer C if you do?⚓️

Happy feast day of Albertus Magnus! 13th century Bishop, Dominican, Scientist, and Philosopher and teacher of Thomas Aquinas.

His “On the Causes of the Properties of the Elements” is a fascinating look into Medieval concepts of the natural world.⚓️

“I’m not praying officer, I’m marching around it seven times in silence with the Blessed Sacrament then blowing on trumpets. Would you prefer exorcism instead?”

Episcopalians: Lords Prayer - traditional or contemporary language? Which do you use? Just curious!

A little swords update. Working on my next steps to move up a skill level in HEMA, but also one of our church members gifted me a rapier! All is says is “SPAIN” on the blade. Tip is sharp but not blade. Decent flex. Handles well. Need to get some pumpkins on sale and give it a try. Maybe sharpen?

Why do
Modern liturgies
Break themselves into lines
Even if not intended
To be read in unison
And not poetry?
This seems silly
Please stop
And write prayers as
Paragraphs
Unless you have
A specific reason
Thank you ⚓️

Ok, so my wife and I started playing MTG a bit, but gotten lost in the rules a few times. Not fun to spend more time looking up rules than playing and often doing it wrong!

Looking for a good updated quick guide cheat sheet. Any good ones fellow geeks here like to use?

A primary outreach ministry for us here is supporting military families (we’re right next to a large base), so I was invited to a change of command ceremony today for the 14BEB. Still forming why I think this, but the short ritual was a better leadership transition than the BCP Rector installation ⚓️

Trying to think about how I think about church resolutions.⚓️

I consider these really-
1) Add/Edit a policy document, or canons (inc BCP, so change Doctrine)
2) Direct a specific organizational apparatus to do something particular
3) Allocate resources (donate to X, create fund, create position) 1/5

Diocesan Convention this year is a hybrid with Zoom but also various regional in person locations (this Parish included). So all votes on phone, many joining at home online, and collective zoom at five locations.

And the tech is…. Working! I’ll admit entering this skeptical. Minor blips at most!⚓️

Things I’ll never regret in life
1) Getting married
2) Becoming an Episcopal Priest
3) Improving my diet and exercise
4) Switching to Linux

What, in your view, is the purpose and intended practical result of church resolutions directed towards civic institutions such as national governments (especially foreign ones)?

It seems odd to me. Will we write them a letter? Do we expect our religious statements to influence their decisions? ⚓️

Wait wait, the EP 1 in Episcopal EOW makes us the Church into literal Israel!? “We” (us) were called into Covenant with Abraham? “We” (us) were delivered by the Exodus? The BCP “your people” is good, and sure “we” benefit, but are “we” really saying we’re Israel in any sense we can say that? ⚓️

Rite II has the option before Confession every Sunday! I introduced it months ago and we hear the Summary of the Law every week now in Rite II⚓️
The people want the Law. We want it read out to us in church. What is the Gospel without the Law? ⚓️
It was a very good decision to go #touchpews at a Rite I service across town. I was rewarded with a Palestrina Mass setting and plenty of mental space to listen and reflect. It's a long time since I heard the Summary of the Law in church. ⚓

My speculative belief (coming up this week to St. Francis Day) is that in the New Creation after the Resurrection we'll be able to resurrect our dead pets. This assumes my belief in a very physical and material (though glorified) resurrection as was that of Jesus ⚓

Book recc on the political and social background of time of Jesus? History and relationships between Pharisees, Sadducees; Galilee & Judea as political and social regions; what exactly the Scribes were, and politics between the Priesthood and Rome, etc? More recent than my seminary stuff?⚓
