We can have a good conversation about what standards, assessments, and/or evaluations are needed to ensure a teacher is ready for the classroom. But miss me with the idea that you can just walk in off the street and be a teacher. It’s a profession.

100%. I want to point out that many not-for-profit journals are in this plot. It's not strictly pocket-padding.
There is a huge issue, however, with a model that asks successful authors to fund the editor work that went into rejecting the other 70-90% of papers! 📄
