Why is this happening? Oklahoma has tens of thousands of abandoned, unplugged oil wells.

When oil companies dispose of wastewater by injecting into the ground, those wells provide pathways for the waste to shoot thousands of feet to the surface, contaminating drinking water sources along the way.

For my PhD dissertation chapter, I spent months shadowing Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary folks trying to prevent this back in 2015 — fixing water quality, making more no-take areas. But we all saw the writing on the wall. All the "management" in the world can't stop a changing climate.💔

Finally! This solar canal is fully live, and it has many benefits:

— saves water, by reducing evaporation
— avoids land use for solar
— it’s easy to connect to the grid
— provides clean energy
— more effiicent production: the water cools the panels
