In the past ten years, I've taken my family to see the Mythbusters tour, a Bill Nye lecture, a Steve Burns lecture, planetarium shows, Hairspray, Barefoot in the Park, Newsies and a Cirque touring show. Tickets have been between $20 and $25. I think Bill Nye was $15.

Also, buy tickets direct, not through a ticketing agency. Third-party sellers will charge double or more.

Also look to local community theater and city symphony/orchestral offerings. Local dance schools may be presenting things like The Nutcracker.

The more the universe culls, the better we all are, but still. There are some preferred options out there.
