People with autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic diseases can continue caring for families, participating in work & community and live without long-term disability by being diagnosed early and have treat-to-target goals met. Really hard to do in NZ when depts lack resources for comprehensive care.

Chair of the Council of Medical Colleges and former RNZCGP president, Samantha Murton, delivered a stinging rebuke of the bill: “We considered an approach of amendments to the bill, but on the whole it’s too regressive on improving outcomes, particularly to Māori.”
The council’s primary concerns were the abandonment of an equitable approach to healthcare and section 11, which on its face prevents clinicians from speaking out on behalf of patients, Dr Murton says.
The council and the Medical Protection Society agree the clause is unnecessary and should be removed: “There is no legal reason to have it, and it could have a chilling effect on doctors’ advocacy.”
Dr Murton says the bill was a surprise to the council, which comprises 36 clinicians representing 18 colleges who meet regularly, “and did not know anything about it before it went through. ![The headline suggests these patients have “no medical reason” to be in hospital. But they’re receiving care from nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, and other allied health professionals. They have “complex discharge pathways” requiring “specialist nursing and allied health workforces.”
So here’s my question: When did “medical” become synonymous with “clinical”?
The journalist speaks to the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists and APEX unions. Why not approach NZNO or PSA – the largest nursing and AHP [allied health professional] unions – to speak to the actual roles nurses, physiotherapists, or social workers play in these patients’ hospital journeys? Or the professional bodies who represent the disciplines actually mentioned as providing the care…
The story frames everything around medical oversight, when nurses and allied health professionals spend far more direct time with patients and contribute the majority of what makes someone “ready to leave hospital.”
This isn’t just about one news story. It reflects deeper assumptions about whose expertise counts in healthcare.
