This. One hundred percent this!
1. Contrition.

2. Admitting that past atrocities were the cause of systemic racism today.

3. No more whitewashing history in our schools.

4. Public condemnation of hate groups in America.

5. Land expansion to Indigenous nations.

6. Reparations to Black American descendents of slaves.

All the more impressive considering that Sharon Begley was a truly decent and lovely human being.
pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Another great thread.
Have you ever heard that Oregon has the ugliest, most racist white people? It's because of welfare

In 1850, the US tried to build an all-white state. But only single white men showed up, so they had to create the biggest land welfare program in history.

I WISH I could make this shit up.

We could've had Maya Wiley as mayor 😭
i see Maya Wiley there, so let this be a random, "I told you so," that you coulda had her for mayor instead of, you know, the crook.

So get Mamdani in there, and neither of those two other knuckleheads!

Sad but true. This is a sensible thread.
A few years ago, I was representing a leftist family in foreclosure pro bono. I found a couple of procedural errors that I wanted to use to fight the foreclosure, but the clients said no because they believed it would have required us to concede the validity of the capitalist foreclosure process.

😎VISION TO REALITY! Four years ago, I helped launch a new program based on the idea that Somerville should fix up and donate abandoned bicycles instead of just auctioning them off.

Now, in partnership with the YMCA, it’s a reality - learn more here: somervilleymca.org

"The enemy of my enemy may very well also be my enemy" is one of life's most important lessons.
The enemy of my enemy is not always my friend. Such may be an ally for a time, but friendship requires that someone stands with me against my enemies not because of who my enemy is, but because of who I am. Be worthy of such friends.

"Emotional support state"
Whenever you feel the need to deny a particular massacre occurred, first ask yourself

"Am I doing this because it destabilizes the idea of my emotional support state?"
Okay going from “there was no massacre at Katyn” to “there may have been some killing at Katyn” after seen the signed order is funny as hell where do these people come from

Excellent article.
new from @kylietcheung.bsky.social in @teenvogue.com: recently, men have impersonated plainclothes ICE agents to assault women—only possible, she argues, because state agents commit violence with impunity.

"To be clear, men wouldn’t be posing as ICE agents and assaulting women if ICE didn’t exist."
How ICE Raids Are Making It Easier for Civilian Men to Assault Immigrant Women
"This phenomenon is only possible because of the outsized power that state agents have always had to abuse and control women and victims' bodies," argues Kylie Cheung.

Thank you for this thread!
Debating people's right to exist is how we get the genocide in Occupied Palestine.

Israelis debated Palestinians' right to exist and decided the answer was no.

You know who wasn't consulted? Palestinians.

Funny how that happens when we debate people's rights like that.

First, all of them have been central to dismantling the public health and scientific infrastructure of their agencies, sidelining and firing hundreds of people. Any notion that they were going offer a constructive new vision was sadly mistaken. 5/

white cis men blocking people of color and other members of vulnerable communities because their risk factor is a lot different than ours is peak white nonsense.

excellent reporting and a good example of how unhinged some drivers can be and why I take anti-bike rhetoric seriously. The way many people talk about cyclists online is so dehumanizing it normalizes the idea cyclists don't belong on roads and that hurting them is OK.
Meanwhile, some chud in a truck assaulted a cyclist here in Bend

I lost a lot of subscribers to my newsletter last week because I sent out this short piece about how Schindler’s List is the reason I call the genocide a genocide and stand against it

You do realize that what you're really saying is "Straight men are not owed romantic love, and should resign themselves to being alone forever if they aren't privileged enough to meet a standard of social acceptability."

Is there anything the criminal gang in the White House is doing that doesn't use lies as a pretext?
Deploying military troops to seize control of our nation's capital is sickening.

It is more terrifying because of the lies used as a pretext.

Violent crime in our capital is the lowest it has been in THIRTY YEARS, according to the US Dept. of Justice. www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/v...

Great thread.
This is a good question.

There are, for me at least, five reasons.

1. Because due process is a human right for everyone. As soon as you start making exceptions for anyone, there will be exceptions for everyone. Murderers should get due process because EVERYONE should get due process.
