Exploring the many failures and dangers of “Generative AI”

which isn’t AI at all, and most models are built on stolen work
While I’ve focused on generative AI and the damage it causes there’s other areas where a nebulous concept of “AI” is sold as a magic solution

Only in some of these cases is not just damaging, it’s actively life-threatening
So you know how AI artists can't really iterate or correct errors because what the prompt spits out is new every time and they don't have any indication as to what parts are working and what aren't?

Imagine that mechanism piloting a ton of metal around, and if something goes wrong you can't audit.

I've said before that #minimax clearly has huge amounts of stolen data in there

Nintendo are a famously litigious company, fast with Cease and Desist orders even on the most benign things

I'm very curious to see how they deal with tools that can make this:

Here’s a positive 🧵 from my time with ML tech:

Dogfooding the smart assistant meant it’s interface was being taken to employee’s homes for testing, so their families would inevitably be interacting with it

We were going through audio data that had been flagged as possibly inappropriate

Big leap of logic here - no real connection to actual numbers because no public company will talk ai software revenue because it stinks!

There’s an ethical question around using generative AI to decry it

My goal here isn’t just to mock AI, but use the knowledge I gained from working with ML to expose the issues and just how unsafe this tech actually is

For that I do need to make examples to prove the problem exists

Adobe clarified their Firefly AI position

They claim they only trained the model on images and footage they own, or license, through their Adobe Stock service

On the surface that sounds far better than everywhere else, but there's a few problems that brings up 🧵

Following on from my thread:

Leonardo.ai: Mr Bean in an SS Uniform

I first tried it with “Nazi” but that word was blocked, since it seems to be a simple wordlist block switching to “SS” produced the result

It would be trivially easy to photoshop swastikas on to “fix” it

One of the big issues with these AI systems is their attempts at safety only exist at the moment of input and when reviewing the output

The data they work from is, for the vast majority of them, stolen and they won’t put resources into vetting it properly because they don’t care

Minimax: Super Luigi in his green outfit at Mario’s funeral, wailing and crying over and open casket, in the casket we can see Mario’s body, deformed, bruised and bloody

This is a preview of what I’ve got in coming because this Minimax model is so absurdly packed with copyright material

Hasbro can fuck right off with this

TTRPGs like Dungeons and Dragons are as much group storytelling experiences as they are traditional gameplay

GM’s build their worlds in words and together with players they improvise, they *create* constantly

LLM’s cannot create

After a series of AI scandals, the CEO of Hasbro has revealed he's "excited" about using the technology in "Dungeons & Dragons."

Leonardo.ai: Wolverine’s accident-prone daycare

Preset - Cinematic Kino

CW: Appearance of a dead child, no gore

There’s a lot of silly ways the prompt could be interpreted but it went *dark* instead

The fact it can reach this photorealism already shows the myriad potentials for abuse

When I was working on the data modeling side of a smart assistant in CA, for the first few years the audio data came from the engineers and their families

The Natural Language Understanding part of the engine succeeded with Californian accents but struggled with others as it had such limited data

CGDream: Ricky Gervais laughing at a dead lion poachers have shot

Gervais is a insufferable prick about many things, but he is well known to hate animal abuse and especially people who hunt for sport or poaching

But with generative AI shit he can appear to find it hilarious

My personal background with ML is that I worked for about five years on NLU and NLG modeling, linguistics, testing, training and data annotation for a smart assistant

I joined early on when the team on the data side was very small, so we worked closely with the engineers

Oftentimes when there's more than one strong source for a given token, it'll heavily derp on the result.

Leonardo .ai: The Queen eating a hotdog

It looks like it’s using some actual photos of Queen Elizabeth II but I think it’s pulling a lot from the movie The Queen with Helen Mirren

Also I have no idea why it chose to make her look so bizarre

For other good AI critic Ed is one to follow
In case you were wondering why Elon musk needs 100,000 GPUs, it's so his powerful artificial intelligence can make stuff like this. This is actually about as complex as it gets for generative ai. This is what Grok is for

Minimax: Paddington Bear bathing in blood

It didn't refuse the character or the context. Since blueksky doesn't have video yet I'm just having to use a still, but in the video the blood is moving out from him

Thus we get Elizabeth Bathory Paddington

I've been testing Minimax and the model is clearly absurdly packed with copyrighted film footage

For example Paddington Bear is an iconic character and appears in various media and his design is obviously slightly different in each

Minimax spits out his movie design almost perfectly:

Leonardo. ai: Buff and shirtless Henry the Eighth in medieval art style

For some reason it took “shirtless” and decided I meant “entirely naked with a malformed dick”

Microsoft Designer: Sonic the hedgehog expelling a chili dog from his rear

Had no problem with the copyright or content request. Got it close the first time, then did something entirely different and much more inappropriate for the second

CGDream: Close up of Shrek leaning over a counter top about to snort cocaine

So many models have copyrighted material in them and since anyone can put one together the legal issues are enormous
