Introducing myself with four spaceships

My Google Calendar is so weird right now
Goodness me, I stayed up late reading and it’s already Partially Muscled Skeleton Screaming by the Perimeter Fence Day. Hope you’ve all been good this year!

I chewed my nails aggressively as a kid, and the habit followed me into my 30s. I almost never chew them anymore, but I've never gotten skilled at caring for them, either. I keep forgetting to trim them, and the sides will eventually tear (right by the quick, inevitably).

I've been so excited to read THE WILL OF THE MANY, and it has such hype. And sure, I'm only 36% through the audiobook, and it IS good...

.. But it's been giving Young Roman Batman vibes. I can't shake the image.

Started the new season of PHYSICAL: ASIA, and it always amazes me how different the editing is based on culture. 50 minutes into the first episode and they hadn't even begun the first event. Nearly an hour just meeting the teams.

It they filmed it, they kept it. Didn't mind a bit, though.

Watching the 1978 Halloween film with my preteen, and I'm struck by how patient and earnest horror fans in the late 70's must've been. So many long, uncreative shots. Such a slow burn.
Not a bad film, mind. Just very much a product of the times.

Also, Michael is 21?! Incredible.

Realized last week I haven't read the newest Stormlight book, and it's been long enough since I've read any of them that a reread seemed necessary.

Just finished Way of Kings yesterday, and already about 15% into Words of Radiance. Feels like I'm reading them for the first time, and it's great.

Windows 10: You can find out and fix if your speakers are set to stereo instead of 5.1 with one click from right of the taskbar.

Windows 11: Fuck you, we've buried that information completely, in an old control panel, because we're the most incompetent group of fuckwits on earth outside politics.

A sobering chastisement of my own inner reactionary. This is why giving up / doing nothing as some sort of perverted "justice" is the wrong call. This is an excellent thread.
Ron, I get that you're angry. I get that you want accountability. You probably want a little revenge. Probably a lot of revenge. But your comment is completely absurd. It's clownish. It's inhumane. You're better than this. And you should be better informed.

Currently listening to WHEN WE WERE REAL by Daryl Gregory, which is going well. Second book of his I've read (AFTERPARTY was well written but had a polarizing protagonist who I didn't take to until nearly the end, which gave the whole book a bitter taste).

The wife and I both read SWORDHEART by T. Kingfisher recently. She enjoyed it immensely, while I enjoyed it a bit less. We both blame the medium for this (I used the audiobook, while she read the paper version). Only way to test that theory is to reread it in paper though, so... /shrugs

I find that more and more of my day is spent showing my techy bosses that my soft skills have just as much of an impact on a password reset call as keyboard shortcuts. Likely more.

Didn't get the firefighter job simply because I told them I'm pro-fire. These purity tests are divisive and will get us nowhere

Immortality's so often described by writers as a burden/trap. Either you wallow in despair, watching everyone you love die, or you lose your humanity, becoming a monster. There are subcategories, but those seem to be the two main paths for the modern immortal.

I'm not falling for it, immortals.

Also, apropos of nothing, Goodwill yielded me a near-perfect hardcover of Meg Howrey's THE WANDERERS and a much-loved paperback of N. D. Wilson's DANDELION FIRE.

When my wife and I married, I brought most of the books into our relationship. This wasn't because she didn't read—she was and is a voracious reader—but because she was raised dirt poor, and owning books is a luxury.
I didn't understand that at the time. It took me years to grasp the concept.

WONKA is, in my opinion, a nearly perfect movie. It's only marred by Hugh Grant's wildly unnecessary inclusion.

I honestly think it's better than the original.

Woke up with the unmerited gall to have a dental emergency on a Friday.

Luckily my dentist stood his ground and kindly offered to let me come in on Tuesday, provided I asked nicely.
