What we are living through is the PEAK of "drained pool politics"

Drained pool politics is the termination or defunding of public resources due to the will of one group, whether they also use the resource or not.

Think the end of public pools nationwide b/c white people refused to integrate

when people vote for a guy who had dinner with two nazis, called white supremacists "very fine people," and promises to hunt down immigrants en masse, it's because of economic anxiety. when they vote for a guy who wants to make rent and food more affordable, it's because they are anti-semitic.

Unidentified men grabbing someone off the street and putting her in a car because she wrote an op-Ed. This as flatly authoritarian as anything we’ve seen in this country in a very long time.
Video of the international student at Tufts being arrested by "federal authorities" in Massachusetts has been released and it's terrifying.

They're not even uniformed officers. Just secret police thugs in hoodies and masks.

The U.S. government detained an Indian citizen who was studying and teaching at Georgetown University, and said he had been deemed “deportable” for violating the terms of his student visa.

Jawdropping.

You would expect this in a dictatorship, not the United States.

This country is unrecognizable.

I'd like to bring this video to your attention.

It's doing pretty significant numbers for what it is, so while I understand sharing it won't make a difference for those knee-deep in the cult of personality, I'd say it has a better-than-average chance of resonating.

I've been thinking a lot about that bumper sticker which says "everything looks like a conspiracy theory when you don't understand how anything works" and folks it's pretty obvious to me that the people in power right now have absolutely no desire to understand how anything works.

How’s this WSJ take aging
WSJ this morning. lol at the last bit.

"Leaders on both sides need to stop describing the stakes of the election in apocalyptic terms. Democracy won't end if one or the other candidate is elected. Fascism is not aborning if Mr. Trump wins, unless you have little faith in American institutions."

Been seeing an increase of useful terminology developing among academics to describe the right’s appropriation of these ideas:

“inverted victimhood”
“hijacked victimhood”
“imitated victimhood”

The challenge is getting media folks to do the power analysis around victimhood claims in real time
In all seriousness, it's profoundly offensive how RWers steal the language used by minoritized communities to name oppression, and appropriate it to serve their narrative of martyrdom. From perverting the meaning of "woke" to this BS "minstrelsy" schtick, it's just ludicrous and gross.

One of these days we're gonna have to reckon with the fact that "money that I spend which does not directly benefit me is a waste" is a popular sentiment.

I think we should state plainly that this is selfish on its face.

And stupid when you have awareness which extends beyond your nose.

Here is a 2019 version of my presentation on the complicity of Nazi lawyers that the Justice Department canceled for next week--and then uncanceled.

I don't know, but I suspect that the reaction of the community here on BlueSky was part of what changed their minds.
